Now that pitcher Cliff Lee has snubbed an absurdly rich seven-year offer to come pitch in NYC for Frilladelphia, and outfielder Carl Crawford similarly rejected the team for the Red Sox, the Yankees are reconsidering their options for free agents to fill in the gaps in their lineup. Most prominently, the Yankees only have three starters locked-in to their rotation, and one of them is coming off a disastrous year (which may have been caused in part by a very nasty divorce, it seems). So what does Goliath do when he doesn't look so much like Goliath anymore?
Yanks Turn To "Plan B" As Free Agent Plans Are Aborted
Cliff Lee Snubs Yankees, Heads Back To Philly
Turning down various rich offers, including one from the Yankees, pitcher Cliff Lee has decided to return to Philadelphia. The Daily News reports, "The Yankees received a call shortly before midnight from [Lee's agent Darek] Braunecker, who informed them that the 32-year-old Lee had decided to leave their seven-year offer for about $148 million on the table. The Yankees had gone up a year after originally offering Lee six years for $138 million."
Yankees Pursue Lee, Flirt With Crawford
Now that the whole Derek Jeter contract negotiating near-fiasco is done (albeit, after a last minute "angry" press conference), the Yankees have turned their attentions toward pursuing pitcher Cliff Lee and outfielder Carl Crawford. Lee, whom Joe Girardi calls "important to us," has already been offered two seven-year, multi-million dollar contracts with the Washington Nationals and an unnamed team (probably either the Anaheim Angels or Rangers). The rumor mill has it that Yankees are expected to offer him a mammoth 6-year deal worth between $140-150 million very soon. Even Yankee fans can't get in the way of a deal like that, right?
Yankees Swimming In Gold Gloves, Wooing Cliff Lee
It's been a busy week of awards and off-season hustling in that gated-community that is Yankeeland. Three Yanks infielders, Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano, all won Gold Gloves for their sterling defensive play this season. It was Jeter's fifth such award, Teixeira's fourth, and Cano's first. Even though some think Jeter, who only had six errors last season, is "not a brilliant defensive player," everyone agrees the award will add more ammunition to his current contract negotiations.
Rangers Owner Slams Yankees Fans, Then Apologizes
Before his team lost the World Series yesterday, Texas Rangers CEO Chuck Greenberg bitched about Yankees fans during the ALCS, telling KESN, "I thought Yankee fans, frankly, were awful. They were either violent or apathetic, neither of which is good. So I thought Yankee fans were by far the worst of any I’ve seen in the postseason. I thought they were an embarrassment."
Cliff Lee Still Interested In Yankees, Despite Yankees Fans
We don't know if anyone ever told you, but sports fans are assholes. Which is fine when someone makes the unforgivable mistake of wearing a Red Sox hat in the bleachers of Yankee Stadium, but not when the target of the drunken mockery is the wife of a player the Yankees are trying to sign.
A Look at the MTA's New Video Ads Inside Subway Cars
Your $2.25 subway fare now comes with an added bonus: baseball highlights to help take your mind off of your neighbor's fingernail clipping. Today the MTA rolled out the first ever video commercial inside the Times Square shuttle. Last Night's Action: Even Without Lee, The Yankees Win
The Yankees won 6-1 over Seattle, thanks to Mark Teixeira's 16th and 17th home runs. The Mets fell to Atlanta, 4-2; R.A. Dickey pitched well until he gave up back-to-back home runs in the seventh.
Yankees Trade For Cliff Lee "Imminent" Not Happening!
The Knicks might not have been able to convince Lebron James to come to NYC (let us not forget the gospel of delusion), even with the huge resources and dollar signs at their disposal, but leave it to a pro organization to show you how it's done: the Yankees are on the verge of completing a trade for ace pitcher Cliff Lee from the Seattle Mariners. And they're so Fonzie about this stuff, they're trying to get the trade completed before tonight's game, when Lee is scheduled to pitch against them!
Before Game 1 Win, Phillies Ace Took Subway To Stadium
Okay, fine—this story makes us feel a little more guilty for complaining about the subway's seemingly slower service (seriously, what's been going on?): Before Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee dominated the Yankees during Game 1 of the World Series, he took the subway to Yankee Stadium because traffic from Manhattan to the Bronx was terrible.
