The Yankees' season ended last week, but the team is still a hotbed of activity. A group of executives for the Bombers will be meeting in Tampa, FL early next week to come to a decision regarding the fate of Joe Torre, the team's manager. George Steinbrenner, who made a name for himself as an eager firer of managers before taking an involuntary break from baseball, declared that he'd like to fire Torre after last...

However, they still trail 2 games to 1 and Joe Torre’s neck is still on the line. Torre has done the right thing and announced that Chien-Ming Wang will start tonight on short rest. Wang gives the Yankees a better chance of wining than Mike Mussina, but keeping Cleveland in check will not be easy. To make matters worse, Joba pitched two innings Sunday and Mo one, so their availability in a close game is in question. What happens later tonight is impossible to predict, but at least we have another game to watch.

This past week, the big wedding wasn't even real! According to the many paparazzi photographs of the Sex & the City movie filming, it seems that Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw is finally stepping down the aisle. With, we assume, Mr. Big. The wedding between the fictional sex columnist-turned-author and the rich business guy (it's never been totally clear what Big does, except smirk and show up at the right and wrong times) took place at St. Patrick's Cathedral. The bride wore Vivienne Westwood, her bridesmaids did not wear matching bridesmaid gowns. We'll know more when the movie comes out next year.

Tonight, the Yankees will face off against the Cleveland Indians at Yankee Stadium, and many hope the Bronx Bombers can avoid the sweep (and mayflies) and claw their way back to winning this first round of playoff games. Since things are so nerve-wracking, we thought some Yankees fans - and even haters - might be find this Village Voice story funny.

- Curtis Martin gave the Jets notice that he won't be playing this year. On the physically unable to perform (PUP) list since the start of the season, Martin and the Jets had until Tuesday to determine if he would be coming off that list. The all-time leading rusher for the Jets now moves to the reserve PUP list and his future playing prospects look doubtful. While he didn't explicitly say that he was going to retire, Martin is without some cartilage in his right knee, resulting in a bone-on-bone condition. Sounds delightful! If he retires, Martin would leave as number 4 on the NFL's all-time leading rushers list behind Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton and Barry Sanders with 14,101 yards. Gothamist once heard a story that Martin dropped a deuce in a urinal at his old high school in Pittsburgh (Taylor Allderdice). Does that detract from his accomplishments? Of course not. If anything, it makes them even better.

Yesterday, Billy Wagner, the new Mets closer announced that he was dropping out of the inaugural World Baseball Classic. CC Sabathia of the Cleveland Indians is also stepping aside, which is potentially a bigger problem for the United States than Wagner not playing. The US team now only has 3 starting pitchers - Jake Peavy, Dontrelle Willis and Roger Clemens - potentially a problem considering all the rules on the books. Lucky for the United States, they only have three games in pool play.

The Yankees' season comes down to this final week. They are in a flat-footed tie with Boston for the AL East lead, and both teams are a half game behind the Cleveland Indians for the wild card. For the Yankees, it is the first time the last week of the regular season has mattered since 1995. For Yankee fans, it may be a bit too tense; for baseball, it's great.

It was the worst loss in the history of Baseball. Let that sink in. In over 100 years of baseball there has never been a loss as bad as the one the Yankees suffered from the hands of the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night. 22-0. It was the low point of the Yankee season. But, it only counted as one game in the standings. The next day the Yankees put it behind them and came out with a 5-4 win and then clinched the series with a 9-1 win last night.

The article cites numerous occasions where the interaction between owner and GM are less than perfect. From the Boss summoning his GM down to Tampa in the off-season, to the Boss deriding Cashman for the play of the team, to Steinbrenner making moves without letting Cashman know. The question is whether or not his relationship with Steinbrenner is enough to drive Cashman away from the team with the biggest pockets in baseball.

The Mets responded by tagging the Cleveland Indians for 14 hits and seven runs and making Don Baylor look like a genius. The most important development was the two out at bat with the bases loaded by Mike Cameron. Cameron came in for his defense and but his hitting has been below average even for him this year. He is hitting .202 with 66 strikeouts in 208 at bats. Last night he showed some grit and battled with a two strike count to drive in two runs, making the score 3-0 and the Mets never looked back.
