Painted Flag Censored From Brooklyn Art Show

Painted Flag Censored From Brooklyn Art Show

This Friday the Gallery House in Clinton Hill is opening a new group exhibition called “Reclaiming Space." One artist that was meant to be involved, however, has just been tossed out. Clark Clark contacted us today saying his piece (larger picture) has been removed from the show. He explained:

"On the 4th of July, I received a phone call from the show director and artist, Jonathan Levy, that my painting 'Evolve America,' which I hung on July 2nd, was censored from this weeks upcoming show at the Gallery House. I was told the building's property manager sent a cell phone photo of the painting to the building owner who lives in another state. The building owner called his lawyer. The lawyer called Levy and told him that it was illegal to paint on a flag. The lawyer requested it be removed immediately or the entire show would have to come down. I was also told that I could not release any photos to the media. more ›

Street Artist Urges NYC to VOTE

Street artist Clark Clark (fake name alert) has been urging New Yorkers to vote through his "VOTE" graffiti campaign. The design mimics that of Robert Indiana's famous LOVE sculpture circa the 1970s. The 25-year-old Clark told The Villager:

“I’ve hit four boroughs now,” Clark said, sitting in his Flatbush, Brooklyn, apartment, surrounded by his own work. “I still want to do Staten Island. I had wanted to go and do all of Vito Fossella’s walls, but he did the right thing and stepped down.”
He also notes that it's an homage to artist Indiana, not a parody -- and hopes to connect with the younger, urban voters by appealing to them through his nonpartisan campaign. He told the paper, however, that he thinks "the people who will respond to graffiti, demographics show, will probably vote for Obama over McCain." more ›
