Live John Hughes Musical Extravaganza Coming To Town
Bless John Hughes and his infinitely quotable, excellently-soundtracked '80s gems—we're talking Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, etc. But for those who don't have time to watch them all in a row, a new musical has taken the liberty of curating the filmmaker's greatest musical moments, and putting them all together in the form of a live show, called, appropriately, For The Record: John Hughes. LAist loved it when they did a Baz Luhrmann edition a few weeks back, and the crew will be making their New York debut at City Winery on June 27th. Tickets and information available here.
Video: Andrew Bird Debuts New Song at City Winery
We've made no secret of our adoration for the mesmerizing multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter-whistler Andrew Bird, so when it was announced that he'd be appearing at City Winery Friday night as part of John Wesley Harding's Cabinet of Wonders, we marked our calendar with a big red AB (yes, with a heart around it). It's been almost two years since Bird last left us spellbound at Radio City Music Hall, and though his appearance center stage on Friday was limited to three songs, he sat in on a handful of other numbers and debuted a new one. Here's video:
Pee on a Jew at City Winery
What's your favorite bar bathroom in town? The website Asylum.com recently performed a vital service by profiling some of their favorite men's rooms, with an emphasis on classic urinals, like the grand 140-year-old marble jobs at Foley's Irish pub, where restaurant staffers often give tours of the bathroom. But what really caught our eye is the high-tech new urinal at City Winery, which features a motion-activated water wall framing a 50-inch plasma screen at waist level.
Wine Lovers "Tweeting Up" For "Spit & Twit" @ City Winery Sunday
On Sunday, the snobby, pedantic atmosphere that often dominates wine tastings will get rocked by the smug, over-sharing culture that always permeates Twitter! This City Winery event (which merits mention if only because of its name) is called "Spit & Twit." Who can resist? On Sunday afternoon, tweeting oenophiles will have the chance to try over 100 wines from 35 wineries around the world. But here's where it gets interesting or annoying, depending on your feelings about Twitter and those who hold forth on "tasting notes."
Openings Roundup: Co., D.B.A. Brooklyn, City Winery
Co.: Jim Lahey of Sullivan Street Bakery fame at last strides confidently into the pizza arena this weekend, and has been instantly hailed a colossus. The triumph has been long anticipated; his sleek new Chelsea pizzeria with the Google-defying name was at one point supposed to debut back in December 2007. It languished at the bottom of the memory hole until November '08, when the folks at Slice unveiled a tantalizing photo essay on the pies, the oven, and the dining room. Last night it finally opened for real, and if you need any further convincing after viewing their pizza porn, then you hate pizza. Slice's Adam Kuban declares the pies "amazing" and deems Lahey "a bread genius, and as the crust is the hardest part of pizza to perfect, we're already in good hands." 230 Ninth Avenue, (212) 243-1105
City Winery Brings Barrels to SoHo
Last night the City Winery opened its slightly unfinished doors to the press, revealing New York's only fully functioning winery/venue. Downstairs in a temperature-controlled room, casks of wine made on the premises were being stored...some of it for customers who had already purchased their own. (Customers like Lou Reed.) That's right, possibly the best thing about this place is that you can put your name on a barrel and come tap into it whenever you like...for a price, of course.
