Bronx Transgender Couple Can Marry, City Apologizes

After a 14-month legal battle, a transgender couple from the Bronx was given permission to marry by the city clerk (below), who apologized for the treatment the couple received when they first attempted to get a marriage license. The couple, one male to female transgender and the other female to male, had been in a relationship for over a decade and attempted to wed in December 2009. But a worker at the City Clerk's Bronx office asked for their birth certificates because they didn't look like the sexes listed on their photo IDs, something Michael Silverman of the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund calls "illegal and unconstitutional." more ›

Only Two Couples Get Domestic Partnership Ceremonies So Far

The City Clerk's office began offering marriage-like ceremonies for couples entering into domestic partnerships on Thursday, but so far just two couples have taken advantage of the new service. Geared towards same-sex couples as an alternative to marriage, the ceremonies cost $25 more than the standard domestic partnership registration fee. However, just two same-sex couples have partaken in the wedding-like ceremonies. San Francisco circa 2008 it's not. more ›

Surprise Wedding Reception for Unsuspecting Couple

So they already crashed a (fake) funeral, and now they've gone and crashed the nuptials of two young New Yorkers in love. A couple had just finished tying the knot at the City Clerk’s Office in Manhattan when they were greeted by Improv Everywhere's Charlie Todd, and here's what happened: more ›

Extreme Marriage Bureau Makeover

Extreme Marriage Bureau Makeover

Yesterday, the NY Post revealed that the dingy Manhattan Marriage Bureau would be getting a deluxe makeover. First of all, the City Clerk's Office will move from 1 Centre Street at the Municipal Building to 80 Centre Street. Second, Mayor Bloomberg's personal decorator, Jamie Drake, will be overseeing the redesign - at a discount (we doubt the new bureau will have the touches that Mayor B's swank townhouses do), but the budget is still $13 million. more ›

Lovebirds Enlist Post's Help With Marriage License

2007_05_weddinglicense.jpgAnyone who has had to wait on line at any state or city agency will love this story. A couple went to the Bronx Supreme Court yesterday because they waned to get a marriage license. Jonathan Figueroa and Marjorie Lumbano waited on line for an hour and made it to the front by 3PM, well before the 4PM closing time. Only they were turned away because the workers were having a retirement party for a colleague. The Post got involved:

In vain, [the couple] tried knocking on other offices in the courthouse - until a court officer finally told them to seek help in the press room. more ›

Bill Banning Car Alarms is Silenced

Councilman John Liu of Flushing said that there is no proof the alarms work and that "there is an overabundance of evidence that blaring car alarms annoy the living daylights out of people." That's one astute council-member. Flushing residents be proud. more ›
