Cinco de Mayo 2009 NYC: Where to Eat, Drink, Hit Pinatas

In the immortal words of Ween, Cinco de Mayo's on Tuesday. Which is tomorrow. It will be raining, but did a little rain stop some 4,000 Mexican soldiers from defeating almost twice as many French invaders back on May 5th, 1862? No, they vanquished their oppressors, just as we shall vanquish the temptation to stay inside watching Biggest Loser: Couples tomorrow night. Here is where you'll find us raising a glass to General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín, who we've been big fans of since we looked all this up on Wikipedia five seconds ago.

Starting tonight (Cinco de Mayo) and continuing through Friday, Crema Restaurante will be offering a special five course prix fixe menu, with tequila drink pairings, that dovetails Mexican and French cuisines. Chef Julieta Ballesteros, from Monterrey, Mexico, calls the menu a “peace offering” of sorts to the French, and most of the dishes draw heavily upon her training at New York's French Culinary Institute. Even if you're not up for dinner, you might want to swing by Crema to sip some of their specialty French-Mex cocktails at the bar, like The Au Pear: White Rioja Sangria with Poire Williams Brandy. In this interview Ballesteros tells us about her twist on Cinco de Mayo dinner, her preferred hangover remedy and her worst kitchen injury.

There's no shortage of fiestas this Cinco de Mayo, so pull out the maracas and get going.

When Judge Michael Sauer sentenced Paris Hilton to 45 days in prison (which she may not even fully serve), Kathy Hilton asked, "May I have your autograph?" - insinuating he was seeking publicity.

  • And Megnut reminds us that it's not just about the margaritas -- we're actually celebrating the Mexican defeat of the French in a battle that took place in 1862. Despite the Mexican victory on cinco de Mayo, the French were able to place an emperor in Mexico who ruled until 1867, when he was executed.
  • Happy Cinco de Mayo...while you're not eating guacamole, sipping on frozen margs and taking a whack at a Sparks filled pinata...you may want to do one of the following this weekend:

Ah, Cinco de Mayo. We finally learned the backstory this year. Apparently, several decades after Mexico gained independence from Spain, France sent 6,000 of its soldiers to invade Mexico in 1862. On May 5th of that year, 2,000 ill-equiped but passionate Mexican citizens defeated the French army. Every year, on May 5th, it has been traditional to honor those brave fighters by partaking in a night of music, tequila and authentic Mexican cuisine, and we are here to help you do so.

Do you have one of those hamburger-crazy friends who is very hard to shop for, this side of wrapping a pound of ground sirloin with a ribbon? If you do, then we highly recommend you check out O'Neill's Hamburger of the Month Club. Coming from what might be the best press release ever to include how hamburgers and beer can be gifted over a calendar year, Gothamist learned that you can get a friend a special hamburger-plus-beer pairing per month over 12 months for $100, or do a half-year of burgers and beer for $50 (a one-off beef'n'beer fest is $10). Here are some of the pairings:

February - “Red Hot Burger” topped with roasted red peppers, grilled red onion, red cheddar cheese and smoked chipotle ketchup. Served with a pint of Murphys Red Ale.

There's a lot going on this weekend, as per usual. While we didn't celebrate Cinco de Mayo last night, nor were we at the New Order show...we are finding ourselves a little bit tired today. We blame the weather and lack of caffeine in our system, so we're hoping the sun will come out and we'll be able to motivate to some of these events:

Although technically, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican defeat of the French army at the Battle Of Puebla in 1862, Gothamist looks at it as a great excuse to celebrate with food and drinks. Then again, we turn just about anything into an excuse to celebrate with food and drinks. Tap into your Mexican heritage and join in the fun.

Citysearch has an editors' roundup of places for eat, or find a Mexican restaurant in Manhattan using Menupages. Also, NY magazine said Maroon's has the best margarita, Pampano the best quesedilla, and Bar@ Etats-Unis the best guacamole. Or, check out some Cinco de Mayo recipes from Epicurious and Tabasco.
