The Yankees have had a glorious history, but it has not been one free of tragedy. From Gehrig and Hunter to Mantle and Munson, disease and accident have taken many of the teams’ legends before their time. Cory Lidle was only a member of the team for two months, but his sudden and tragic death Wednesday fit into an all-too familiar history.

- Giants 6, Mets 4: The Giants and Mets waited out a rain delay before the first game of their single ticket doubleheader before San Francisco picked up the victory. Former Met Armando "Who Let the Dogs Out" Benitez picked up the save in a way that every Met fan can remember - walking two batters before getting the save. Of course, that's assuming he even got the save when he was with the Mets. Barry Bonds was 2-3 with 2 walks, 1 RBI and a run scored.

Sometimes a team can win, but yet lose in the grand scheme of things. That's what happened to the Mets yesterday afternoon. While they defeated the Giants 9-7 in 11 innings and won a series for the first time at Pac Bell SBC AT&T Park, Brian Bannister went down with a hamstring injury in the 6th inning. Bannister, a rookie that helped the Mets in their hot start, had to be helped off the field after lying on the ground after scoring a run in the 6th.

So far in this young baseball season, Tom Glavine has his stuff working. Unfortunately for him and the Mets, he faced Tim Hudson in yesterday's 2-1 loss to the Braves. Hudson was magnificent yesterday, throwing a perfect game into the 6th inning until Ramon Castro broke it with a single. Castro later threatened to score on a fly ball to left, but lead footed as he is, he was thrown out at home with a perfect throw from Braves left fielder Matt Diaz.

Clearly, you can't win them all. For the Mets, that's always the case when Victor Zambrano pitches. Last night, with Zambrano on the mound, the Mets lost to the Braves, 7-1. Zambrano, who won his last game, allowed seven runs and hits, including three home runs over his short five inning outing. Kyle Davies stymied the Mets, allowing only one run and three hits in his first career complete game. The one run was the lowest run total for the Mets all season. The lone Mets run came on a Chris Woodward homer in the 3rd.

Tuesday's win wasn't as uneventful as the Mets' season promises to be. Mike Piazza was finally dropped in the order, and David Wright, who has been the best hitter in Queens this season, moved into his fifth spot. Willie Randolph still thinks that Jose Reyes and his .280s OBP should be hitting leadoff, but Gothamist has to assume he's not one of our readers, or he would have changed that by now. The Mets would have been better off with Kris Benson, Tuesday's starting pitcher, batting first. Benson's arm has been better than his bat, but it is the tepid Mets' lineup that will keep them from gaining any ground in the mediocre NL East. That and their magnetic attraction to even records.

The Mets started the weekend with promise that quickly disappeared. After beating the Marlins 7-6 on Friday, behind the clutch hitting of Chris Woodward, the Mets returned to their inconsistent ways. On Saturday they jumped out to a 3-1 lead before collapsing down the stretch in a 7-3 loss. The only thing that drives Gothamist crazier than Jose Reyes leading off is the sight of Jose Offerman playing first base. His inability to handle a throw from Marlin Anderson proved costly as Florida went ahead for good in the sixth inning. On Sunday, the erratic Mets’ offense botched a golden opportunity as they loaded the bases with one out in the first but failed to score when David Wright and Chris Woodward struck out. That was all Florida ace, Dontrelle Willis, needed as he pitched a complete game shutout, scattering three hits.

Both teams had shoddy defense, but the Yankees', which has been dreadful all year, imploded again. Robinson Cano booted what should have been an inning-ending ground out, and Jason Giambi couldn't flip the ball to Tom Gordon on another routine play. Both happened after Tony Womack's poorly-traveled field trip in center field on a Chris Woodward double. By the time the inning ended, the Yankees had handed the Mets three runs.
