Last Night's Action: A Tough Loss

Last Night's Action: A Tough Loss

  • Angels 7 Yankees 6 (10 innings):Extr Up and down, up and down, this game kept spinning. Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run homer to put New York ahead, but the Angels came back. Jorge Posada hit a homer to tie things up in the eighth, but the Angels wouldn’t relent. They made things very interesting in the bottom of the ninth, but Mariano escaped a huge jam. more ›

  • Yankees 5 Cleveland 3: New York has passed the first big test on their current schedule, sweeping Cleveland and improving to 15-games over .500. Sunday’s win was the toughest of the series as Andy Pettitte and Jake Westbrook locked into a pitcher’s duel for the first part of the game before the Yankees jumped out to a 4-0 lead. But, Cleveland made things interesting in the ninth. more ›

  • Yankees 16 White Sox 3: Is it really possible that the Yankees could tie a club record by belting eight home runs, yet somehow Alex Rodriguez would be about the only person not to get one? Somehow, that’s exactly what happened Tuesday as every starter except for A-Rod, Jeter and Andy Phillips went deep and Hideki Matsui did twice. Shelly Duncan continued his Shane Spencer imitation by belting his 4th home run in 21 AB’s. more ›

COMEDY: This weekend marks the 9th Annual Del Close Marathon. Del Close, if you don't know by now, "was the driving force behind improvisational comedy in Chicago for over 30 years influencing Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Mike Myers, John Belushi, Chris Farley and the Upright Citizens Brigade to name a few." The annual weekend began after Del's passing in 1999. more ›

  • Royals 7 Yankees 0: Kei Igawa should buy a plane ticket back to Japan. Today’s ledger of 5.2 innings, seven hits and 2 walks while allowing five runs just reinforced the fact that Igawa is nothing more than a batting practice pitcher. The Yankees could have won seven-straight, but they didn’t, at least we know that Igawa is junk and Phil Hughes will be back in the rotation soon.

  • Tri-City 8, Brooklyn 6: Eric Nielsen didn't get out of the second -- when Tri-City scored four runs -- and that didn't help the Cyclones, who couldn't peck away enough.

No Love Lost Between Judi And Rudy's Kid

No Love Lost Between Judi And Rudy's Kid

A new wrinkle to the Rudy Giuliani presidential campaign that doesn't involve the words "anti-" (like anti-gun, anti-abortion, and anti-straight-only marriage) or "marrying his cousin." Yesterday, the NY Times revealed that Andrew Giuliani had been estranged from Rudy Giuliani, because of problems with his dad's new wife. more ›

Best Film You're Never Going to See: "Ghostbusters Go To Hell"

Oh, he’s amazing. [laughs] But my thought was that what works so well about the first two is the mundane-ness of it all. So my notion was that Hell exists simultaneously, and in the same place as our consensus reality. But it’s like a film shutter — it’s the darkness between the 24 frames. When we’re blinking on, they’re off — so we blink alternately with this other reality, which is Hell. more ›

    Andrew Giuliani Grows Up

    Andrew Giuliani Grows Up

If it's Sunday, it must be time to contemplate little Andrew Giuliani. He could be dating Sarah Hughes, as they appeared at the premiere of The Island together. And the Daily News has two features on him (1 and 2), looking at how he's grown up as well as his burgeoning golf career. In fact, little Giuliani plays at the public golf course at Van Cortlandt Park:

"I love this city. I'd rather play here than anywhere. I take a lot of pride in Van Cortlandt and being from New York City."
And the Van Cortlandt golf course was the first public course in the country! Still, when we think Andrew, we think Chris Farley's impression. more ›

    The Little Giuliani

    The Little Giuliani

The NY Post had an item about Andrew Giuliani, son of Rudy, just missing the cut to play in the Barclay's Classic, a golf tournament in Westchester, and Gothamist thought, "Wow, he is almost all growed up!" Because when we think of Andrew Giuliani, we think of Rudy's inaugural speech, where Andrew climbed all over his dad, becoming a national punchline. And it started a few great spoofs on Saturday Night Live with Chris Farley as Andrew and Kevin Nealon as Gooliani, plus Tim Meadows as David Dinkins. These days, the Mayor's kids are relegated to their ponies and studies! more ›

Christopher Guest at MoMA: "Peanut. Hazelnut..."

Christopher Guest at MoMA: "Peanut. Hazelnut..."

Some fun Guest stuff for all you bastard people: A Fame Audit from Fametracker, an interview with Movie City News and Caryn James' feature on the retrospective in today's Times. It seems that Guest has always wanted to just do only three "mockumentaries" and that he doesn't really like TV except The Office. And Gothamist once shared an elevator with Guest when he was promoting Almost Heroes (Matthew Perry and Chris Farley as 18th century explorers - not being shown in the tribute). Guest asked us what we thought of his seersucker suit, and Gothamist couldn't help ourselves when the words "It's kinda Matlocky" came out. But we didn't mean Matlocky in a bad way! more ›

    Tracy Takes Tuesday

    Tracy Takes Tuesday

Morgan stars in the sharp-edged family comedy as father, husband and small-business owner Tracy Mitchell, who, with his beautiful, no-nonsense wife Alicia (Tamala Jones, “Head of State”), share their modest apartment with their two kids, 13-year-old Derrick (Marc John Jefferies, “The Haunted Mansion”) and 7-year-old Jimmy (newcomer Bobb’e J. Thompson). While at work at his auto garage, Mitchell is responsible for his other more dysfunctional family of mechanics -- Spoon (John Witherspoon, “The Wayans Bros.”) and Bernard (Heavy D, “The Cider House Rules”). Every day, they remind Tracy of the headaches of running a business as they contend with neighborhood characters and would-be customers such as Freddie (Katt Williams, “The Friday After Next”).

    Behind the Comedy: SNL

    Behind the Comedy: SNL

The best thing about Virginia Heffernan's New Yorker profile of Tina Fey, besides feeding our Tina-Fey-starved minds, is the breakdown of the different comedy styles of SNL performers and writers: more ›

    Rudy 'n' Judi

    Rudy 'n' Judi

Rudy Giuliani and companion Judith Nathan were married yesterday by Mayor Bloomberg at Gracie Mansion. Gothamist likes the idea of having a press conference right after the wedding - it's very romantic. We were also shocked when we saw the pictures of Caroline and Andrew Giuliani, especially Andrew. Gothamist is very fond of Chris Farley's performance as a clambering, fat, hyper Andrew Giuliani during Rudy's inauguration and we're sure all of you are, too. more ›
