The big budget spectacle, King Kong, will open in two weeks, and while most of the trailers seem to play up a fight with Godzilla and lots of jungle scenes (Naomi Watts - hot and sweaty!), part of the story does more to New York. Now, director Peter Jackson decided not to film in NYC because finding 1933 New York in today's New York is difficult. (Gothamist sorta buys that, but we actually believe that once you've created Middle Earth, then you've got a god complex.) The NY Post reports at what the King Kong New York, part model, part computer generated, includes:

Depression-era big town, Model T Fords roll through intersections of red and green streetlights (no yellow), blasting that wheezy dying-duck horn and narrowly missing a swarm of jaywalkers.

It's been oh, about five million, thirty-one thousand, three hundred sixty minutes since the musical Rent premiered on Broadway, and Gothamist must admit that because Seasons of Love has been playing over and over again thanks to the ads for the movie Rent, we're tempted to see it in order to get the song out of our head. Some early reviews are out (Variety thinks it's very Chris Columbus, very lame but the Hollywood Reporter is much more positive), but we have enjoyed Perptually Nauseous's take on the film, after seeing it with "with five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred homos." Mainly, it's about realizing that Father Time has truly done his job:

And when the big "La Vie Boheme" number came on, I know, without a doubt, that if I were to be put in that situation, I would be the one saying...

Chris and our production designer Howard and our cinematographer Stephen have all dedicated themselves to defying anyone to recognize that the entire film wasn't shot in NYC. We shall see, but from everything I've seen so far, I think they've done a great job. At any rate, the bottom line is that the East Village has changed so much from when Rent takes place that even when we did shoot there, Howard had to make adjustments to the buildings to make them look authentic to the time of the film.

From Revolution Studios, the studio producing Rent, the studio behind classics like Tomcats, the Master of Disguise, and and the upcoming Christmas with the Kranks whose previews make our teeth hurt, a letter to Gothamist about the movie version of Rent being filmed in San Francisco's manmade island:

We saw your recent story on the Gothamist website about the film version of Rent, and we wanted to take the opportunity to clarify a few points that were made.
While you state that Rent is to be filmed in San Francisco, in fact all exterior shots for the film are to be filmed in New York City. The Treasure Island location in San Francisco is where the soundstages and interior sets are to be located.

Rent the musical is still on Broadway, with Drew "Brother of Nick, Brother-in-law of Jessica" Lachey and Frenchie "I was kicked off American Idol because of my past" Davis.
