Boy Falls To Death From Brooklyn Building

Last night around 7:15 p.m., a boy died after falling from a housing development in Crown Heights. His body was found in a lot near the Albany Houses on Bergen Street. The boy was between the ages of 9 and 12, and neighbors were stunned; one told the Daily News, "I can't get over this. It is unbelievable." The police are investigating what happened: While there was an open window on the 5th floor, the NY Post reports, "It wasn't immediately known where he fell from, but cops believe it's more likely the roof of the 13-story building rather than one of the apartments." If he did fall from the roof, police will also try to determine if the boy jumped, fell or was pushed. Update: It appears the 9-year-old jumped from the roof using a "makeshift parachute" of a plastic bag and strings.

NYPD Calls Van Incident That Left 2 Kids Dead an "Accident"

The horrible incident where a van—left empty and running by a driver making a delivery—rolled onto a curb in Chinatown and killed a four-year-old girl and three-year-old boy, plus injured 11 other toddlers and two adults, was deemed an accident by police yesterday. The NYPD did question the van's driver, but spokesman Paul Browne said, "It turns out this was an accident," and, therefore, the driver, who was questioned and whose blood alcohol was negative, will not be charged.

From NY1: "A child has allegedly been hit and killed by a campaign RV for City Council hopeful Mike Ricatto in Ozone Park." Prediction: Mike Ricatto, running for State Senator-elect Joseph Addabbo's seat, won't win.

Last night around 8:30 p.m., Mario Avilaz "died in a hail of gunfire" between "at least two shooters in front of a Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment building," the Daily News reports. Avilaz, described as a good studentl, had been hanging around outside his building at Kingston Avenue and Herkimer Street. The police have not disclosed what the motive was, but a community activist told the Post he thought Avilaz was "hit by a stray bullet from a nearby dispute" (perhaps a fight between two girls). His mother tearfully told the News, "I was getting ready for Christmas, and now I'm getting ready for a funeral. I'm nothing without my son - my only son."

A toddler, who ACS had returned to his family in Queens just one month ago, was declared dead yesterday by authorities. The Daily News reports, "Investigators were trying to determine if the child was murdered - the victim of his mother, her boyfriend or, stunningly, his 5-year-old brother."
