Tabloids Deem Phillies "Frillies" From "Silly-delphia"

With the Yankees about to play in their 40th World Series tomorrow night, the city is excited. Especially the NY Post and NY Daily News, which are going to town with numerous stories... and Shane Victorino gets the "Frilly" treatment on the Post's cover. One Post story is headlined: "Their fans are second rate & so is their city."

NYC, Philly Make Cheesecake Vs. Cheesesteak Bet

This Sunday, the NY Giants will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles to see who heads to the NFC Championship game. And the divisional playoff game has brought out forth some "friendly" wagering from Mayor Bloomberg and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter.

Meow! The Post reports that a Long Island man is suing a West Village bodega Andy's Deli at Seventh and Grove Street because the bodega's cat attacked him - and wants $5 million. However, Andy's Deli owner Andy Singh says he doesn't even own a cat. Dunh dunh DUNH!

open-sign.jpgJohnny Utah's -- Nothing says classy like a mechanical bull and an enormous bourbon selection. Marlon Manton, formerly of Blue Smoke, will be serving up twists on Tex-Mex, including Texas brisket with red-eye gravy, and smoked chorizo with pickled okra. 25 West 51st Street, (212) 265-8824.

What with Paris Hilton's release earlier this week and the upcoming celebration of American Independence (sorry, Londonist!), we've been thinking a lot about freedom. Freedom to vote, freedom to choose, and most importantly, freedom to blog. Here are a few things we're happy we've been free to blog about this week.

Myspace.com/heresthethingcomedy is Sean O'Connor , Nick Maritato , and Andrew Wright . You're going to be hearing those names a lot starting February 6th when their show makes its debut at The People's Improv Theater. They'll lure you in with their line-ups, but it's their hilarious sketches and stand up is what's going to keep you coming back for more.

As fall settles in and another calendar page gets turned, thoughts turn from bbq's and vacations to holidays and the realization that '06 is coming to an end. With all that going on, with change in the air, we wonder what is it that made that makes the -ists ponder?

- And the cutest panda sneeze ever

-- Red Hook residents protest murderous Fairway traffic, but still enjoy the fresh produce.

Shifting one stop West on the L train this week puts us at Third Avenue and 14th Street, an area on the food uptick since the opening of Whole Foods and more recently Trader Joes. Although the immediate area lacks any real stellar restaurants, there is an abundance of places to grab a good bite to eat and even a little Japantown that has been brewing on 9th Street for a few years.

- Carl’s vs. the Cart – not a fair match.

President Bush is an awesome friend. If you're Karl Rove. See, he nominated John Roberts (not the CBS guy...just a judge who looks suspciously like Pat Sajak) to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court, and Gothamist can't help but think the nomination came to stifle the news that Karl Rove - and an aide to Vice President Cheney - could very well have been the smoking gun in naming an undercover CIA operative. He managed to get on the cover of Time and Newsweek, only to make us realize he looks a lot like Brian Posehn. Will having a conservative Supreme Court nominee be enough to knock the leak story off A1 for long? Well, at least there's the Daily Show.

A small Philadelphia area controversy makes Gothamist wonder the WIIWINY (What If It Were In New York) factor: A young Asian-American is trying to get a 55 year-old cheese steak shop named Chink's to change its name because it's culturally insensitive. Chink's is actually a nickname for the shop's first owner, Samuel Sherman:

While checking out the Howard Dean blog, we noticed our good friend Courtney chowing down on a Philly Cheese Steak. Mmm...cheese steak. Apparently, a Philadelphia supporter (also dad to one of the campaign's communications people) shipped 50 cheese steaks to Dean's Burlington, VT HQ. Mmm, cheese steak. Courtney also says the desserts were Tastycakes, Philadelphia-style.

New York magazine gives its picks for good street eating (as well as best outdoor eating and outdoor bars) this summer. We want to check out the hot dog cart in Madison Square Park (which the Times' Alex Witchel did a feature on in the Dining section two weeks ago, basically a year+ after the initial excitement), but the idea of a pork bun from Chinatown's Sun Dou Dumpling Shop on Grand Street sounds just as good.
