There is no shortage of touching eulogies for Mike Wallace, the legendary CBS News correspondent, who died Saturday at the age of 93. Journalism colleagues, including the New Yorker's Ken Auletta, CBS News correspondent Bob Simon and Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Seymour M. Hersh, remembered the brazen tactics Wallace would often employ to get the story first. Hersh recalled the day Wallace scooped him on a story by interviewing his traveling companion over the phone, as Hersh was taking the subject to New York. "Wallace had scooped me by interviewing [Charles] Radford while I was flying with him in tow," Hersch wrote in The New Yorker. "I was more embarrassed than angry. The Old Man had shown me his moves, and taken my candy away."
"Abrasive" And "Tender" Candy-Snatcher: Mike Wallace Remembered By His Colleagues
Legendary 60 Minutes Journalist Mike Wallace Dies At Age Of 93
60 Minutes veteran Mike Wallace, a pioneer in the form of broadcast journalism, has died at the age of 93. According to the Times, Wallace died in New Haven Connecticut, and CBS's Bob Scheiffer said "his family was with him." Wallace had been ill for several years, and underwent triple bypass surgery in 2008.
CBS Orders Sitcom Pilot From Louis C.K. & Soup Nazi Creator
Louis C.K. is riding his giant wave of money and acclaim from his brilliant self-produced stand up special to network TV. According to Hollywood Reporter, CBS has given the green light to the comedian and creator of the Soup Nazi Spike Feresten for a half-hour comedy pilot. There's no title yet but it will likely not feature the words "Pootie" or "Tang."
Letterman May Stick Around For Another Two Years
Take that Leno! David Letterman is reportedly close to a deal with CBS that would keep the 64-year-old as the Late Show host until 2014—which would make him the longest-running late-night star in TV history. Less certain is the fate of Craig Ferguson, whose hilarious and incredibly low-budget Late Late Show airs after Letterman. Wonder if the arrival of Steak 'N Shake in the Ed Sullivan theater will help seal the deal for the Indiana native?
Longtime 60 Minutes Commentator Andy Rooney Dead At 92
Longtime 60 Minutes commentator Andy Rooney, who delivered 1,097 wry on-air essays over 33 years on the show, has died today. CBS News said in a statement that Rooney died after complications following minor surgery. He was 92.
Video: 60 Minutes' Andy Rooney Says Good Bye
Last night was the end of an era for television news magazines. As had been previously announced CBS staple 60 Minutes aired its final regular opinion piece by the man who is arguably our nation's greatest curmudgeon, Andy Rooney. Aired along with a loving sendoff and retrospective interview conducted by Morley Safer, the 92-year-old Rooney's last report from his (sadly clean) desk wasn't too different from the pieces he has been doing seemingly since the dawn of television. Which is to say, please for goodness sake if you see the man eating in a restaurant let him be!
Andy Rooney Is Leaving 60 Minutes And He's Probably Not Happy About It
CBS News announced, "Andy Rooney will announce on this Sunday's '60 Minutes' that it will be his last regular appearance on the broadcast. Rooney, 92, has been featured on "60 Minutes" since 1978. He will make the announcement in his regular essay at the end of the program, his 1097th original essay for '60 Minutes'. It will be preceded by a segment in which Rooney looks back on his career in an interview with Morley Safer." However, Newsday's TV reporter Verne Gay is suspicious about this announcement.
Ted Danson Gets Nabbed By C.S.I. (And Stays On Board At Bored To Death)
Last night CBS announced that they were bringing Ted Danson on board to star in their crime drama C.S.I., taking over Laurence Fishburne's job of chief investigator of the Las Vegas Crime Scene Investigation team. CBS is also moving the show to Wednesdays for the fall, trying to keep it alive after their ratings took a dive last season, its 11th on the air. Executive producer Don McGill is optimistic, and told People, "From the moment we all started talking about the role, it was clear he couldn't be more perfect. Intelligence, wit, warmth, depth of character and emotion, he brings it all. And now he'll have to bring latex gloves, too."
Lawmaker Demands Ben Stein's Apology For Strauss-Kahn Comments
We liked Ben Stein a lot more when he was in those Clear Eyes commercials and made money being an adorable nerd in movies and TV shows, but we should have known better of a former Nixon staffer. After a few merely idiotic missteps recently, Stein shat the bed with his ignorant, sexist comments about the Dominique Strauss-Kahn affair in American Spectator. And New York state assemblywoman Deborah Glick thinks Stein should publicly apologize.
Katie Couric Signs Off From CBS Evening News
Katie Couric ended her five-year tenure as the anchor for the CBS Evening News, offering an interview with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and ending the program with a five minute highlight reel (video below. She said it was "an incredible privilege to sit in this chair... To all of you, thank you for coming along with me on this incredible journey."
Katie Couric's New Show Could Kill General Hospital
With Katie Couric leaving the CBS Evening News after five years the question now is where she will land. And it looks increasingly like she may end up at ABC, a prospect that may mean the end of General Hospital—the network's last remaining soap opera.
"Nut-Less Sociopath" Chuck Lorre Looks For Charlie Sheen Replacement
Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre may be replacing Charlie Sheen and giving Jon Cryer a bigger role, so of course the MaSheen fired off a letter to Lorre (and CC'd TMZ, of course). You can read the entire thing right here, where the self-proclaimed Warlock explains, "My fans may tune in for a minute, but at the end of the day, no one cares about your feeble show without me." Just to play Devil's Advocate for a moment: isn't that how it sort of was before this whole thing started?
Katie Couric Is Really Leaving CBS Evening News
Yep, the rumors were all true: Katie Couric is leaving the CBS Evening News after five years as anchor. And though she has yet to announce where she'll land, rumors that she's heading to ABC reportedly have Barbara Walters in a tizzy.
A Katie Couric/Matt Lauer Reunion Could Be In The Works
With Katie Couric (unofficially!) out at CBS News the hot new parlor game amongst the media set is "where will she land?" And by far the most interesting rumor to that end has Couric hosting a new daytime talk show with her old co-host Matt Lauer.
Report: Katie Couric Will Leave CBS Evening News
CBS's $15-million-a-year contract with Katie Couric—arguably the Rodney Dangerfield of the current crop of news anchors—expires June 4. So naturally the speculation that she'll be giving up her post is making a comeback (we feel like we've been kicking the tires of this story for ages now). The AP is reporting today that, according to a network executive, Couric will be leaving the anchor desk when her contract is up.
Charlie Sheen Gets Fired, Seeks Intern, Still Winning
Charlie Sheen can now officially spend all of his time on what matters most: building his sex palace, taking out trolls, something or other about warlocks, and Tweeting. According to TMZ, the actor was just fired from Two and a Half Men, and Warner Bros. has issued the following statement: "After careful consideration, Warner Bros. Television has terminated Charlie Sheen's services, effective immediately." No word on whether or not the show will go back into production, Warner Bros. says a decision has not been made yet. This move will cost both WB and CBS a lot of money.
Charlie Sheen Claims He's Writing Tell-All Book
It's Saturday, but, of course there's Charlie Sheen news. The successful TV star, off the high of ripping his Two and a Half Men producer Chuck Lorre (which then led to CBS and Warner Bros. to pull the plug on the rest of the season's episodes), now tells TMZ that he's writing a tell-all book...and publishing houses are free to starting a bidding war at $10 million.
Sheen Vows to Show Up for Work at Empty Sitcom Set
Has Charlie Sheen gone too far, or not far enough? Whatever you think about his off-screen exploits, you've got to admit that in this age of sterile, stage-managed celebrities, Sheen's totally uncensored burnout has been as wildly entertaining as it is troubling. What makes this enthralling is that The MaSheen just doesn't give a damn, and this morning he vowed to show up for work on the set of Two and a Half Men, even though CBS canceled the rest of the season. More on that in a minute, but during his infamous radio appearance yesterday, he gave his "beautiful and loyal fans" so much to savor. You can listen to it in its entirety below, but here are our favorite Sheenisms:
Naked Cowboy Should Change Name To Litigious Cowboy
Naked Cowboy is at it again, bringing his shtick back to the courtroom with a lawsuit against CBS, reports TMZ. He's specifically targeting the network's soap opera Bold and the Beautiful, which recently featured a character dressed in only underwear, a cowboy hat, and playing guitar. He views this as a violation of his trademark, and is asking for $1.5 million in damages.
Charlie Sheen's Porn Star Pal Texts Him, "I'm Pregnant"
Kacey Jordan, the adult film star who partied with Charlie Sheen during his infamous (alleged) coke-and-porn star binge last month, is back in the tabloids, thanks to a text message that TMZ happened to get. The message, purportedly sent from Jordan to Sheen, says that she's pregnant, "I don't believe it's yours, but I'm going to Oregon to take care of the situation."
Things Hipsters Do: Sleep In Trees In Central Park
We're so inundated with anti-hipster sites out there, documenting their colorful headband-enhanced outfits, their chest tattoos, or how much they hate Jager bombs, that we sometimes lose track of all the things they like. Such as sleeping in nylon hammocks 25 feet up in a tree in Central Park at night. CBS, you have your latest show: Shit My Hipster Does.
Emeril Fans Get Kicked Down a Notch
Chef Emeril Lagasse pulled a Bieber on fans yesterday when nearly 50 people with tickets to a taping of his new show were denied entrance. One Long Island fan told the Daily News, "They told us we had seats, but they didn't deliver. I'm so mad, because my trip was for nothing." The taping was for a new CBS cooking game show, hosted by the exuberant chef, which would replace As The World Turns.
Adam Lambert Says He's A Performer, Not A Babysitter
This morning on CBS's Early Show, Adam Lambert spoke out about his AMA controversy (which led to Good Morning America cancelling his appearance). To recap: Lambert simulated a blow job and made out with a male during his performance on Sunday night. The Early Show chose to blur out the controversial acts when running the AMA clip this morning — and during the talk segment, that they decided to call "Straight Talk," the openly gay singer defended his actions.
Obama: Walter Cronkite "Never Let Us Down"
Legendary CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite's death is still being mourned by the country. In a statement released by CBS News, President Obama said, "He brought us all those stories large and small which would come to define the 20th century. That’s why we love Walter, because in an era before blogs and e-mail, cellphones and cable, he was the news. Walter invited us to believe in him, and he never let us down."
Walter Cronkite, CBS News Legend, Dies At Age 92
Walter Cronkite, known as the "most trusted man in America" as CBS News anchor, died at age 92 last night. The NY Times' obituary states, "From 1962 to 1981, Mr. Cronkite was a nightly presence in American homes and always a reassuring one, guiding viewers through national triumphs and tragedies alike, from moonwalks to war, in an era when network news was central to many people’s lives." His son told the Times that the cause of death was complications from dementia, while the AP reports, "Cronkite’s longtime chief of staff, Marlene Adler, said Cronkite died at 7:42 p.m. at his Manhattan home surrounded by family. She said the cause of death was cerebral vascular disease."
"Fire David Letterman" Protest Draws More Media Than Protesters
Yesterday, the much-ballyhooed gathering to demand that CBS fire talk show host David Letterman after his questionable jokes about Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's daughter (namely how A-Rod impregnated her by the 7th inning of a Yankees game and how Eliot Spitzer should be kept at bay) drew a few dozen protesters outside the Ed Sullivan Theater. Estimates are as high as 50 and as low as 15. But there was a lot of passion: Josephine Sarnok, carrying a "Over the Line, Dave" sign told Entertainment Weekly, “I’m outraged. It was a low blow. I’m insulted for women. I’m insulted for children. I’m insulted for families. I’m insulted."
Former Suit Salesman Arrested for Raiding CBS Offices
A former Saks Fifth Avenue suit salesman allegedly used his employee-discount threads to glide past security in Midtown office buildings and steal cash and credit cards from empty offices. 34-year-old Edward Proctor was arrested last week and accused of lunchtime stealing sprees at CBS offices and another building on 49th Street in May and June. “I was in the next room eating lunch when he went behind my desk," one victim tells the Post. Proctor successfully robbed workers on the same floor at CBS twice in the same month; police only tracked him down after he allegedly used one of the credit cards to pay for his parking at a garage. He’s out on $40,000 bail, which, one hopes, wasn’t paid with plastic.
Katie Couric Staying at CBS...For Now
After speculation that she would leave CBS News well before her contract expires in 2011, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric said she would be staying put. During the summer television press tour, she told reporters, "I have no plans to leave anytime soon. I'm very committed to the people here and the product." The product in question has lagged in ratings, placing third after NBC's and ABC's evening news broadcasts. Next week, all network anchors--Brian Williams, Charles Gibson and Couric--are joining Obama on his trip to the Middle East. When asked if the media was biased towards Obama, Couric said, "I don't think we're 'in the tank' at all. We talk to Sen. [John] McCain extensively. We go to events he allows us to cover."
WCBS Drops Anchor Tomorrow
It may be Fleet Week, but the U.S. Navy is not the only one in the city dropping anchors this week. WCBS-TV veteran anchor Jim Rosenfield is the latest victim of the CBS local news cutbacks here in New York.
Fast, Furious Speculation on a Couric Departure
As rumors about Katie Couric leaving the CBS Evening News early next year continue to simmer, the Daily News offers one suggestion from a network (CBS? CNN?) "insider": "Take Katie off the 'Evening News,' let her to do Larry King, and then let [Anderson] Cooper anchor" the CBS Evening News.
