Day one of the CFA-Iams Cat Championship feature breed competitions, cats running through the feline agility course, and overall animal adorableness. As promised, this year's cat show had a bit of election year spirit thrown in, as spectators could vote for either a Republicat or a Democat.

It's that time of year again: The CFA-Iams Cat Championship is this Saturday and Sunday at Madison Square Garden. As many cats' fur is combed carefully into place, hundreds of cats will be competing for Best of Breed and Best of the Best honors. There's also the Parade of Breeds, where judges will explain the different Cat Fanciers' Association breeds, like the Norwegian Forest cat (a heavy coat) and the Abyssinian (gorgeous colors). Hundreds of cats in need of a home from various shelter will be there too at the adoption event--we met a few today, and Marley, Lucy and Sebastian would be super sweet additions to any home!

This Saturday and Sunday, Madison Square Garden welcomes the Annual CFA-Iams Cat Championship Cat Show. The show has many guest speakers and events, like the Feline Agility Competition, which is open to the public's cats, too. And, of course, there is the Best of Breed and Best in Show judging.

Woops! Why didn't somebody tell us that the third annual Cat Championship at Madison Square Garden was this weekend? Not to be confused with the Westminster Dog Show the Cat competition... Actually you should feel free to confuse the two, as they seem to be basically the same thing (show, shops and adoption tables set up in the Garden being the main features). One just has prestige and the other has cats. Anywho, the big news at this years show is the addition of a "Feline Agility Competition" which according to the website includes "Cats scurrying through tunnels, jumping, running mazes - every bit as exciting as in the dog fancy! Don't miss It. It will fill your need for laughter and fun." And if that doesn't fill your needs, the good people of the Cat Show want you to know that you can buy the commemorative jewelry here. Oh, and in case you were worried about the stress of this new addition to the show, the Agility comp has no effect on the Best in Show prize. That is decided based on looks alone.

The Upper West Side is overrun with mice and rats! Or at least that's the idea you get from a story in the Post, which suggests that you might be able to stop buying the Fancy Feast and let your cats feast on Grade A New York City Rat. Complaints have been coming in fast and furious to 311 and Community Board 7, which says, "They're in the 60s, they're in the 100's. They're everywhere." Most people having been calling mice "rats," and one woman said, "Over the weekend, I heard a shriek coming from a nearby brownstone. Then I heard the homeowners congratulating their cat, Leonard, for catching a mouse." Gothamist wonders if Community Board should adopt some tough, alley-cat types from a local shelter and have a mousing patrol, because supers generally don't do that much.

The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals tries to deal with the stray and feral cat problem. And in other cat news, an ocicat named Moirai Wedjat won the Cat Show held at Madison Square Garden.

The Post reports that the assistant district attorney claimed Yates was looking to add a bear to the apartment. Holy: If Gothamist recalls, his apartment had five bedrooms and two baths - big enough for a large family, but certainly not big enough for a tiger, alligator AND bear.

Admission is $15 (but the AdoptaCat event is free), but there is a coupon for $2 off. We know one person who went to the cat show and came back with one - little did he know that this cat would rule his life. And for the allergic or architecturally inclined, there is Open House New York this weekend.
