When the plane landed at MacArthur Airport, a flight attendant asked Draco Slaughter about a bag on an empty seat near him. Slaughter said the bag was his and "there was a bomb in it." However, a police investigation found no explosive devices in Slaughter's luggage, and he was arrested for first-degree falsely reporting an incident. more ›

EU Lifting Carry-On Liquid Ban!...in 2013

The European Union says that by 2013 they will get rid of the ban on carry-on liquids, thanks to some new explosive-liquid screening machines. The new restrictions are part of an initiative to make the post-9/11 security requirements more streamlined, and EU Transport Commission spokesman Helen Kearns said there “should be a significant improvement in terms of convenience and ease of travel." The liquid ban was put in place in 2007, after a London airplane bomb plot was found to involve liquid explosives. So bring on as much soda and water as you want!—just make sure you have enough change to pay for the toilets when it gets through your system. more ›

Loaded Revolver in Bag Gets Soldier Arrested at MacArthur Airport

An Army soldier was arrested at MacArthur airport on Long Island Saturday morning after she tried to bring a loaded revolver on a flight to San Antonio, Texas. The piece was not Army issue and 38-year-old Spc. Vonda Collier, who has been stationed for the past year at Camp Liberty near Baghdad, did not have a New York license to carry it. She was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon after it was found during a routine baggage check. Collier is on bereavement leave to attend her mother's funeral in Texas; police say she was visiting relatives on Long Island but her father tells Newsday she has no family here. And last Thursday a man was arrested at MacArthur for trying to bring a pipe bomb on the plane home to Vegas. He says he just wanted to "cause a giant smoke cloud, a flash of light and hopefully a loud noise." more ›

Pipe-Bomb Passenger "Forgot" Device in Carry-On

A judge denied bail to the 20-year-old man whose pipe bomb, knife, fireworks, and .22-caliber rounds in his belongings caused MacArthur Airport to be partially shut down on Thursday. Newsday reports that Magistrate Kathleen Tomlinson thinks that Steven Nobles "poses a danger to the community" and said she was "not sure how a rational person carries a pipe bomb" onto an airplane. She added, "His actions are bizarre." A lawyer for Nobles, a Las Vegas resident who had been working for his uncle on Long Island, said his client "forgot" the pipe-bomb and 7-inch knife were in his carry-on bag (the other things were in his checked bag). The U.S. Department of Justice has not stated whether the items could have exploded on their own, but the authorities are testing them. more ›
