A man was struck and killed by a G train at the Smith and Carroll Street subway station earlier today. The MTA tells us the incident occurred around 12:20 p.m.
Man Fatally Struck By G Train At Smith & Carroll Street
Video, Photos: Brooklyn's Fourth Avenue Flood
Here are photos and video of flooding that submerged parts of Fourth Avenue at Carroll Street in Brooklyn this morning. There's considerable disagreement in the comments section of Brownstoner as to what caused this mess, but apparently this happens every couple of years in this little part of Gowanus. Is this Marty Markowitz's Katrina?
Two Mugged At Carroll Street Subway Station
According to the Brooklyn Paper, two female F-train commuters were mugged in separate incidents at the Carroll Street subway station last Friday morning—and the same gun-wielding man may have been behind the muggings: "The first victim, 56, told cops that she had just gotten off the Coney Island-bound train at around 8:45 am at the President Street end of the station when a man grabbed her purse, pulled a gun on her and said, 'Shut up or I’ll kill you'" and took her purse. "About five minutes later, the same thug approached a second victim, pulling a gun and dragging her to the ground before saying, 'Shut the f— up!'", taking her iPod and Droid phone.
A (Corporate) Nightmare on Smith Street
The NY Times takes a look at Smith Street and the corporate companies creeping into the area and setting up shop. The most recent big announcement is that Trader Joe's is taking over the old bank on Atlantic Avenue and Court Street. How long until more big fish come to feed?
Recycled for Brooklyn Mural
Recently, we passed by the flower kiosk outside our local Key Food at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Carroll Street in Park Slope where we noticed a piece of art tacked to a brick wall alongside tied-up, broken-down boxes, milk crates, a hand truck and piles of trash.
Gowanus Village Drawing Nigh
One of Gothamist's new favorite blogs is The Gowanus Lounge-- it's reporting on real estate and urban development around the city. Today it reports on the acquisition of the Jewish Press Building on Third Avenue and Second Street, one of the last obstacles blocking the progress of the proposed Leviev Boymelgreen "Gowanus Village" project. The company plans to develop the entire lot between Carroll Street and Third Street, from Third Avenue all the way to the Gowanus Canal. That's a lot of redevelopment! Current plans project 400 units on 375,000 square feet of space. The new Whole Foods (ETA still unknown) will be built just a block away on the corner of 3rd Street, so while the toxic sludge in the canal might turn future tenants into mutants, at least they will be well fed.
Opening Day in Prospect Park
Saturday is Opening Day in Prospect Park and Gothamist is hoping we're wrong about the weather. The annual spring celebration kicks off with the Little League Parade at 10am, which starts at 7th Ave and Carroll Street and ends at the Bandshell. For the more civic minded New Yorker, an Opening Day Clean-Up is planned for 10am-2pm (meet at the Tennis House). For the nature minded, electric boat tours are being run from 12-4:30pm, with the first two being special bird-watching cruises. Of course, if you just want to have fun, there's nothing wrong with a nostalgic ride or two on the carousel (open from 12-5pm). Gothamist is morbidly curious about Spring Wash Day (1-4pm). You get the privilege of washing the Lefferts Historic House's 19th century reproduction clothing with only period tools (washboards, lye soap, water heated over a fire). Sounds like crazy hard, and kind of gross, work, but you do get lemonade when you're finished.
F-Train in Winter
Here's a pretty video of a ride between 4th Avenue and Carroll Street on the elevated F line-- sort of similar to Kdunk's video of the same stretch of track, but shot in the opposite direction (facing northeast, as opposed to southwest.) Not sure about the music-- maybe the New York Dolls?

Your Weekly Subway Rant
This time the thing that set Ask Gothamist off was a subway car full of cell phone talkers. Since so much of the city - coffeeshops, restaurants, movie theaters, Central Park - is polluted by wireless yappers, we always appreciated the subway as a sort of underground oasis, free from one-sided conversations and the types of voices that become exponentially louder when talking on the phone.
