This afternoon, there was a water main break at Bleecker and Carmine Streets. As this photograph shows, it created a burbling, muddy-looking lake on the street.

Camera in the Kitchen: Market Table
In the restaurant world, terminology like "organic," "local," and "seasonal" have become so commonplace they can be easy to ignore. But, when Market Table – which offers all three of these – opened on Carmine Street (at Bedford) in the West Village last September, they highlighted a new buzzword: market. With an emphasis on bringing food from the market directly to the table, the restaurant simultaneously offers a capacious (and beautiful) dining room headed by chef Mikey Price (formerly of Mermaid Inn), which is adjacent to a general-store like grocery stocked with olive oils, fresh breads, assorted condiments, dried goods, and a deli case full of gravlax, fresh herbs, cheeses, and sauces and stocks. Price is partner to Chef Joey Campanaro and Gabriel Stulman of the nearby Little Owl, of which we're also big fans.
$400 Cupcake, $5 Cupcake
It might have been more than a little symbolic last week when the huge, pink-frosted gyroscopic cupcake towering over 23rd Street restaurant Burgers and Cupcakes came to the end of its last full spin. Meant to be a proud beacon of sugar, the giant baked good was instead an embattled neighborhood fixture from the start; many were happy to see it go. And it’s gone: writer James Wagner shares one rumor relating the cupcake’s possible fate: that an anonymous buyer took the thing off the owners’ hands for $400.
David Ethan, Co-Owner, The Grey Dog's Coffee
The Grey Dog's Coffee has been open in its Carmine Street location since 1996, and has been a neighborhood favorite for years. David Ethan, who co-owns The Grey Dog with his brother, Peter Adrian, recently opened a second location on University Place. We caught up with David over a cup of coffee (naturally).
The Hungry Cabbie Eats The Outer Boroughs: Lucali's
A lot has already been written about Lucali’s, the fledgling pizzeria in Carroll Gardens. Most of the reviews are glowing. I don’t have much to add.
Puff Invasion
Everyone's in a tizzy this week about Puff & Pao, the new cream puff/Brazilian cheese bread place opening in the West Village, owned by a former lawyer (eh . . . all us foodies are former lawyers, big whoop). But we've also noticed another cream puff addition to the neighborhood -- Choux Factory, on 8th Street between 5th & 6th Avenues. Between those two and Beard Papa over on Astor, the Village might just be cream puff central. According to their website, another West Village Beard Papa is in the works over on Carmine Street. Thankfully, there are almost as many New York Sports Clubs in the neighborhood.
New 'Za on Carmine
Gothamist was just as saddened as most of New York City that Joe's Pizza had to move from its historic Carmine & Bleecker corner location. Luckily, since the original pizzeria shut down, Joe's fans only have to hustle up the street to the corner of Carmine & 6th Avenue for their slice fix.
More Fabulous Fall Feasts
In case you missed the fiesta, see if you can make it to another one of the feasts and festivities on the Gothamist radar:
Say It Ain't So, Joe!
Gothamist nearly had a panic attack when we read the Chowhound Manhattan message board today and saw this rumor about the possibility of Joe's Pizza closing due to a rent increase. Joe's has been one of our neighborhood favorites for years, serving us one of the crispiest slices in the 'hood, and has provided us with many a late-night delivery over the past decade. The demise of Joe's would be like a knife to the heart. Or the stomach. We're hoping that, like the recent B&H Dairy scare, it's just a rumor, and that Joe's will continue to be our go-to spot for grabbing a slice.
All Good Things - Revisiting a lost Sixties band
It was sheer coincidence that Gothamist made plans to see the new musical at the Fringe Festival the night before Little Steven’s Garage Rock Festival, but the timing was sweet. What a great way to get revved up for the big rock show (which also kicked ass, we might add).
