[Updates Below] We've been there for every minute of this agonizing playoff series between the Knicks and Miami Heat—watched every Carmelo Anthony shot attempt, read about every fire extinguisher incident, listened to every absurdly confidant quote. And now we're exactly where we were last season, with a Game 4 elimination match at MSG. Amare Stoudemire is starting, bandaged hand and all—but will it make any difference? We'll be here to update the post through every high and low this afternoon.
[Update] Knicks/Heat Game 4: KNICKS WIN!
Knicks Still Optimistic For Game 3 Against Heat...Despite Everything
In the wake of two bad losses to the Miami Heat and Fire Extinguishergate, the Knicks are not exactly in great shape heading into Game 3 at the Garden tonight. But even with no Iman Shumpert, Amare Stoudemire and Jeremy Lin, the team is still hopeful they can end their playoff win drought...somehow: “It’s a big challenge but we’ve been facing challenges all year,’’ Carmelo Anthony said after yesterday’s practice. “We all got to do it. I’m not going to do it myself. We just got to believe we can go out there and win the game. “They did what they had to do on their court. Now it’s our turn.”
Amar'e Is Real Stupid: Knicks' $99 Million Man Punches Fire Extinguisher Case, Injures Himself
As if losing a second playoff game to the Miami Heat was bad enough, the Knicks' $99.7 million power forward decided to make things worse by apparently punching a fire extinguisher's glass case at the American Airlines Arena in Miami. According to ESPN's league source, Amar'e Stoudemire is "'almost certain' to miss Game 3 on Thursday in New York and there is a possibility that Stoudemire could miss the rest of the series."
Knicks Hit New Low In Opening Playoff Game Against Heat
Well, that's one way to start a playoff series: the Knicks got utterly destroyed in game one of their playoff series against the Miami Heat yesterday afternoon. After a well-played first quarter, the game was never close again—the 100-67 final score doesn't even give you an idea of how pathetic it was. So all that confidence was definitely not justified. NY Times reporter Michael Powell has an idea of how they can win game two though: "Sign Ewing, page Oakley at car wash, ask Starks if he is still limber..."
Are The Knicks Absurdly Confident Or Justifiably Confident They Can Beat Miami?
Why is Stoudemire in particular so confident in the team? He thinks they have more depth than Miami: depth. “Our bench has been phenomenal for us all season long," he told the Post. "We’re a much better defensive team than we were before. We have so many threats offensively to match their offensive threats. So it’s pretty much even as far as our startling lineup and I think our second unit is a little bit stronger.’’
MSG Easter Miracle: Knicks Beat Bulls 100-99 In Overtime
Who knew that the Knicks, battered and with an interim coach, could put on a thrilling Easter show against the dominating Chicago Bulls? Although New York was leading for the first half, Chicago regained its footing in the second. Still, the Knicks pushed Derrick Rose and the rest of the Bulls to overtime, thanks to Carmelo Anthony's efforts. And then Anthony had a three-pointer in final seconds of OT—finishing the game with 43 points—to seal the 100-99 victory.
Carmelo, Amare Show Support For Trayvon Martin
While Geraldo Rivera was busy being a hypocrite, Knicks stars Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire both wore hoodies to honor Trayvon Martin. Stoudemire wore a gray hooded sweatshirt during pregame warmups last night, and told reporters: “We got to set better examples for our community, especially as a watchman. You got to be a leader of the community, and set better examples.’’
Mike D'Antoni Resignation Fallout: Should We Blame Carmelo?
Knicks fans are used to more than their fair share of dysfunction, but yesterday was like a return to the bizarro days at MSG: Wednesday started with reports that Carmelo Anthony wanted to be traded amidst the team's recent free fall—then Coach Mike D'Antoni unexpectedly resigned—and then the team blew out the Portland Trail Blazers by 42. Today, everyone is trying to catch their breath and get some perspective on D'Antoni's surprise resignation. And it seems harder and harder to ignore the fact that Carmelo was the major factor leading to D'Antoni's decision: “I know he tried to implement a certain system. And everyone wasn’t buying into it, so he may have been a little frustrated so he felt stepping down was the best way for him," Amare Stoudemire said, not so subtly alluding to Anthony.
Should The Knicks Trade Carmelo Anthony Already?
Here's the breakdown of the last month and a half for the Knicks: the team was 7-1 without star Carmelo Anthony last month, and have now lost 8 of 10 since he's returned from a groin injury. As has been stated again and again the last few weeks, you can't blame the team's dysfunction solely on Melo—but then again, a definite rift has formed according to the Times: "The Knicks are not a unified team. On one side is Anthony. On the other is everyone else."
Last Night's Action: Deron Williams Tames Linsanity
It was one game, but for all the doubters out there, they have vindication. Jeremy Lin burst onto the scene 16 days ago with a 25-point explosion against the Nets. That game was notable because it was the only until Monday where Lin played with both Amar'e and Carmelo. Monday he played his second game with them and the 100-92 loss to the Nets was not encouraging.
Lingering Questions: How Will Jeremy Lin And Knicks Do Once Melo Returns?
Despite the fact that Jeremy Lin didn't have quite as Linsational a game as his previous four, he still was the decisive leader in the Linckerbockers comeback win over the Minnesota Timberwolves last night. As Goodwin Sports' Nate Jones put it, "Lin didn't have a great game statistically, but it's amazing how the Knicks now play as a TEAM with him on the floor." The big question is: how will the Knicks and Lin play once Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire are back in the lineup?
Last Night's Action: One Up/One Down
The Nets did something the Knicks couldn't the other night, win on the road in Cleveland. New Jersey won 99-96 thanks to big performances from key players. Deron Williams had 27 points and 10 assists.
Last Night's Action: One Up/One Down
Finally we saw a point guard at MSG. The only problem was, he was playing for Phoenix. Steve Nash showed the Knicks exactly what they were missing as he led the Suns to a 91-88 win Wednesday. Nash had 26 points to go along with 11 assists. Meanwhile, the dynamic duo of Amar’e and Carmelo went 12-for-44 from the field with seven turnovers.
Last Night's Action: One Up/One Down
Charlotte is not a good basketball team, but they have beaten the Knicks once this season and came close to doing so again Monday night. Charlotte scored the first ten points of the game before the Knicks settled down and started to play better. Imam Shumpert made his first NBA start a good one with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Tyson Chandler had 20 points and 13 rebounds, partly offsetting a terrible night from the field for Carmelo and Amar'e who combined for a 16-for-43 shooting night. They were much better at the free throw line and that proved vital as Carmelo especially hit several key free throws down the stretch as the Knicks survived 91-87.
Survey: People Hate Kris Humphries More Than LeBron James
Less than two months ago, the basketball season seemed lost—but on Sunday, the NBA returns! It's going to be an exciting Christmas day to herald in the condensed 66-game season, with marquee matchups between several title contenders, including the Knicks/Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks/Miami Heat, LA Lakers/Chicago Bulls, Oklahoma City Thunder/Orlando Magic and LA Clippers/Golden State Warriors. But the real question isn't who to support—everyone who cares already has a team they're loyal to—it's who to hate. And it seems there's a new villain in the league: Kris Humphries.
Chris Paul Has Reportedly Requested Trade To The Knicks
Confirming what we've all suspected since he made a "Big 3" wedding toast nearly two years ago, Yahoo reports that the agent for New Orleans Hornets star Chris Paul informed the team today that he will not sign a contract extension, and wants to be traded to the New York Knicks. Maybe Paul is just really interested in enrolling at Amare Stoudemire's Hebrew school?
Video: Maybe Carmelo, Amar'e Can Play For Sesame Street Now!
Now that the NBA season is pretty much dunzo, maybe we can lobby for Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire to play basketball on Sesame Street! The pair's segment with Grover—to discuss the word "compare"—aired on this morning's episode and it was pretty cute:
Melo In China: Pandas! Shoes! Interpretive Dancing!
Knicks star Carmelo Anthony is currently on a whirlwind promotional tour adventure into the heart of China with fellow NBA star, BFF, and potential teammate Chris Paul. Anthony is ostensibly there to promote shoes, as part of the annual Jordan Brand Flight Tour, a four-city brand promotion that includes store appearances and training camps. But he seems like he's having a lot more fun chilling out with pandas and performing interpretive dances. Watch below:
Carmelo Anthony Hangs With A Panda Like A Boss
With the NBA currently in a lockout that is threatening to derail the entire 2011-2012 season, many players have begun discussing the possibility of playing overseas in the interim. Amare Stoudemire said he had already been approached by teams from Israel, China, Turkey, and Spain. But it seems another Knick has beaten Stat to China, and he loves hanging out with pandas.
Amar'e Thinks Mike D'Antoni, Donnie Walsh Will Be Back
Amar'e Stoudemire, the nearly $100 million man, from being positive about attracting more talent, "Players are looking at the Knicks like, 'I want to play for that team,' so it shouldn't be as hard as it was at the start of the year." Stoudemire even thinks that coach Mike D'Antoni will be back!
Last Night's Action: Knicks Start Their Summer
After putting up valiant efforts in Games 1 and 2 of their series against the Celtics, the Knicks fell flat at home and will have all summer to think about a sweep. Playing shorthanded—Chauncey Billups missed his third straight game and Amar'e Stoudemire wasn't at full strength—the Knicks fell behind and made a furious comeback to make the final score respectable. Kevin Garnett lit up the Knicks, scoring 26 points, and Rajon Rondo had 21. Carmelo Anthony led all scores with 32. Stoudemire had 19 on 5-of-20 shooting. Those two will be back next year, but will Donnie Walsh? That is of course assuming there is a next season. A labor dispute looms.
Hobbled Knicks Fight To Avoid Celtics Sweep This Afternoon
Game 3 of the first round playoff series between the Knicks and Boston Celtics, the first playoff game at MSG in seven years, may have left a particularly bad taste in everyone's mouth. But this strange iteration of the Knicks already proved in the first two games of the series that when not bogged down with injuries, they can compete for real. This afternoon, they just want to make sure they don't get swept at home: "The most important thing is just how much pride we got. I don't want to get swept. We don't want to get swept, so we gotta go out there and leave it all out there on the court, see what happens. If we got to make every hustle play, foul some guys, knock somebody out, do whatever we got to do to prevent a sweep. I've been swept before. It's a sad thing," Carmelo Anthony told reporters yesterday.
Last Night's Action: Carmelo Gives Knicks A Winning Season
Knicks 110 Pacers 109: The Knicks won their 42nd game last night—thanks to a 19-foot jump shot from Carmelo Anthony with just 4.9 seconds to go as well as a block from 'Melo—which means they will have a winning record. Anthony had 34 points in the victory over Indiana, even though he initially wanted to sit out of the game after injuring his wrist. But then "I made a 3 and said, ‘Na, don’t worry about it.'" Amar'e Stoudemire sat out for the second game with an ankle injury.
Video: Elton John Hosts, Sings On SNL, With Guests Tom Hanks, Jake Gyllenhaal, Carmelo Anthony
Last night, Sir Elton John hosted Saturday Night Live, while also taking a turn as the musical guest with Leon Russell (who was just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame). He made jokes about being gay, being a new father, and his past troubles with alcoholism during his monologue ("So far the baby really takes after me; he screams and cries when he doesn't get his way, and he's had his ups and downs with the bottle.") and admitted his black suit was more subdued, but promised he'd be dressed "more fabulous" as the show wore on. The show also got some star-studded cameos—Tom Hanks was in a number of sketches, Jake Gyllenhaal was on Weekend Update, Carmelo Anthony dressed in drag, and Will Forte returned for an ESPN Classic segment. Click through to watch sketches, such as the Laser Cats Digital Short, Elton John dealing with a mean Queen Elizabeth, John and Leon Russell's performances and more.
What The Heck Is Wrong With The Knicks?
Since the massive multi-player trade with the Denver Nuggets that brought Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups to the Knicks, the team has gone 7-11, and this week fell below .500. Ever since they prematurely raised ticket prices for next season, the team has been an abysmal 1-7, and haven't played consistent defense in a single game. Hell, you know things are rough when LeBron James pities you. So what is going wrong, and can the downward spiral be stopped this season?
Last Night's Action: UGLY
Indiana 106 Knicks 93: This would be a good one to remember before you renew your Knicks' season tickets next year. Carmelo Anthony scored 25 by shooting all the time and New York didn't play any defense, allowing the Pacers to shoot 57% from the field. Add it all up and a team 10 games under .500 killed the Knicks on their home court. Renew at your own risk—you've been warned.
Last Night's Action: Wins All Around
Knicks 107 New Orleans 88: Eight months ago, Chris Paul made a toast at Carmelo Anthony's wedding that referenced the idea of a triumvirate of Paul, Anthony and Stoudemire. Wednesday night, Anthony and Stoudemire gave Paul plenty of reasons to come join them when he becomes a free agent. The duo combined for 46 points with Toney Douglas adding 24 in place of Chauncey Billups as the Knicks cruised to an easy win.
Knicks Basking In Carmelo Glow, Nets Doing Their Best
The Knicks and Nets both made huge trades this week, revamping their franchises with big name All-Stars on whose backs they hope to build championship teams in the near future. So how are those trades working out so far for them?
Carmelo Dines At Spotted Pig, Becomes Shake Shack Shake Flavor
Carmelo Anthony may have only been a Knick for a few days, but already he's making waves in the Big Apple gustatory circles. Before setting foot in the city, the Carnegie Deli named a (heart-stopping) sandwich after him, and now he's already had a private dinner at the Spotted Pig and Shake Shack has named a shake after him—the Car-Mallow Anthony Shake!
Carmelo Takes Manhattan: "It's A Dream Come True For Me"
Carmelo Anthony was given several different types of introductions to the city yesterday, all of which left fans jubilant, salivating at the prospect of actual relevancy in the NBA for the first time since the '90s. He was formerly introduced at a press conference prior to last night's game, telling reporters how excited he was to be playing for the team, in the city he grew up in: "I think New York needed a moment like this. When they got Amare, it brought some excitement back to the city. Now, as Amare said, New York basketball is back. Will we win a championship this year? Who knows? That takes time. But this team is headed in the right direction...It's a dream come true for me, and I'm ready to rock."
