Carlos Gomez, the artist who bought you Urballoon, is bringing his newest project—The Urban Speaker—to Tompkins Square Park this Friday. He tells us, "The Urban Speaker is an art installation that transforms public space into an instant stage for mass communication. This portable urban furniture allows people to broadcast their voice in public by calling a telephone number from their mobile phones..." more ›

In Extra Innings, Mets and Santana Reach Deal

In Extra Innings, Mets and Santana Reach Deal

It may have taken a few extra hours, but the Mets finally got their man. The Mets and Johan Santana agreed to a six-year, $137.5 million contract, with a club option for a seventh year. When the Mets and Twins agreed to the trade on Tuesday, Major League Baseball gave the Mets and Santana until 5 p.m. Friday to reach a deal. With the deadline approaching yesterday, but no agreement reached, the two sides asked for, and were given, a two-hour extension. What's a couple of hours when you're working out the richest contract for a pitcher in baseball history? All that's left now is a physical for the players involved in the trade. Santana will take his today. more ›

Report: Mets and Twins Agree to Deal for Santana

The Mets have finally landed a much needed arm to lead their rotation. USA Today is reporting that the Minnesota Twins and the Mets have agreed to terms for pitcher Johan Santana. The two-time Cy Young winner comes to the Mets at a high cost, with the Mets delivering outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey to the Twins. Conditions of the deal include the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a contract (rumored at six or seven year contract extension in the area of $150 million) and that Santana passes a physical. According to USA Today Santana and the Mets have between 48-72 hours to reach an agreement. more ›

Last Night's Action: Yanks Take A Series!

  • Yankees 7 Minnesota 6: The Yankees showed some grit Thursday, overcoming another lousy start from Kei Igawa and a lack of clutch-hitting to get the win. Things looked great in the first couple of innings as New York rebounded from a two-run deficit take a 5-2 lead thanks to home runs from Cano and Cabrera. But, Igawa was awful again, giving the lead back in the fourth by allowing three runs to score with two outs. Igawa may have come with a $46-million price tag, but the Yankees can’t keep sending him out there every fifth day. more ›

Last Night's Action: Much-Needed Win

Last Night's Action: Much-Needed Win

With the Mets outfield still affected by injuries, Beltran needs to step up. His problem is his banged-quad, an ailment that is clearly affecting him at the plate. Who knows when Moises Alou will return? Shawn Green will likely see a decline after his hot start. Carlos Gomez has been all but useless. Why not try Ricky Ledee instead? The journeyman outfielder hit a home run to help his cause Monday. On Tuesday, the Mets face American Leauge Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana. Good luck with that. more ›

Last Night's Action: Streak Stopper

Last Night's Action: Streak Stopper

  • Mets 2, Yankees 0: Poof! Just like that, the Mets' five-game losing streak and the Yankees' nine-game winning streak have been snapped. Oliver Perez shut down the Yankees for the second time this season, and Roger Clemens was good but not good enough in the loss. Jose Reyes and Carlos Gomez -- the two Mets speedsters and fans of untucking their jerseys within seconds of the final out -- supplied the two Mets runs. Given the teams' divergent paths of late, the Mets probably needed this game more. Their bullpen, a source of weakness during their stumbles, shut down the Yankees late. With Tom Glavine going against Tyler Clippard on Saturday, the Mets probably have the edge. Then again, Clippard already has one strong start against the Mets -- in his Major League debut.
  • Sky 73, Liberty 66: Things don't look as rosy for the Liberty, losers of three of four. Shameka Christon and Tiffany Jackson were the only people in double figures, but they and their teammates didn't shoot that poorly or play that bad defense.

Last Night's Action: Clutch Enough?

  • Liberty 83, Mercury 82: Another game, another win for the Liberty, now 4-0 on the season. This time it took Jessica Davenport's three-point play in the final 10 seconds. She was one of four players in double figures.

Last Night's Action: A Nice Ninth

That all changed in the ninth. After trading runs in the eighth, the Mets started the inning with Delgado earning a walk. Carlos Gomez came into run for him and promptly stole second. He scored on a botched fielder’s choice and then the floodgates opened. Reyes and Chavez singled home runs and Carlos Beltran doubled to make it 6-1. Only some nifty relief pitching by Randy Messenger kept the Mets from doing more damage, but they had scored enough even though Billy Wagner pitched a shaky ninth. more ›
