Yesterday afternoon, as a Bronx mother was walking around her double-parked minivan to get her three-year-old son out, a man jumped in and stole the car. Luckily, after 45 minutes, police found the car abandoned around the corner—and with the child safe inside.

Yesterday, an absent-minded car thief spotted an idling SUV in Queens, jumped in, and sped off gleefully...until he realized there was a nine-year-old in the backseat. Thankfully, the tyke kept his cool, and the thief wasn't interested in any attempted kidnapping charges. Teens Who Killed Sleeping Man Sentenced To 20, 22 Years
Two teens who killed a Chinese newspaper executive who was sleeping in his car in 2009 were sentenced to 20 and 22 years in prison. Corey Azor, who was 16 at the time of the killing, and Chris Levy, who was 17 at the time, admitted they went into the car, put David Kao into a chokehold, and then dragged the 49-year-old into the backseat where they strangled him. They pleaded guilty for manslaughter and robbery; Azor got 20 years, while Levy got 22 years.
After Police Layoffs, Newark Has Troubling Crime Spike
Due to a multimillion budget gap, Newark laid off 167 police officers (13% of its force) earlier this month. Since then, crime has increased there have been numerous carjackings—victims include a staffer in the NJ Attorney General's office and a Newark school principal—and shootings (since Thursday, four people have been shot dead and six have been wounded). Now, Newark Mayor Cory Booker says that police will be at "full force" this weekend, claiming "dozens" more cops will be patrolling.
Three Arrested In Murder Of Jersey City Couple
Jersey City police announced they arrested three people in connection of the killing of Michael Muchioki and Nia Haqq. Muchioki, 27, and Haqq, 25, had returned to Jersey City from a dinner celebrating their engagement when they were fatally shot in an apparently botched carjacking. According to the Star-Ledger, two 19-year-old women and a third person "are charged with felony murder, armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and possession of firearms for an unlawful purpose." Deputy J.C. Police Chief Peter Nalbach said, "This was a heinous crime. They were two productive people who were taken off the face of the earth, and the hopes of their families and friends were destroyed." The victims are being buried side-by-side.
Jersey City Couple Killed During Suspected Carjacking
A couple who had just returned from their engagement party was fatally shot in Jersey City early Sunday morning. According to the Star-Ledger, police believe that Michael Muchioki and Nia Haqq may have been killed in a botched carjacking: They were found, each with a gunshot wound in the head, near Haqq's Honda CRV on Randolph Avenue, right by Muchioki's apartment. Muchioki's mother said, "My heart has been ripped out."
Additional Teens Charged In Robbery, Killing Of Queens Man
Two more teens were charged in connection to the robbery and fatal strangulation of a Chinese newspaper executive in Queens. According to the Daily News, "Jay-Quel Merkerson and Bryce Newton, both 16, were hit with various counts after both were spotted in David Kao's stolen Lexis SUV after he was slain"—Merkerson for possession of stolen property and Newton for unlawful use of a stolen vehicle. The Post says that a 15-year-old was also charged with possession of stolen property. Currently, Corey Azor, 16, and Chris Levy, 17, were charged with Kao's murder and are being held without bail. Azor and Levy, along with a third teen Keron Wiltshire (who was charged with possession of stolen property—Kao's SUV), allegedly attacked and robbed another Asian man in May; Queens DA Richard Brown said, "While all three defendants are accused of preying on Asian men to rob, two of the defendants are charged with a senseless and brutal crime that, by their own alleged actions, shows a complete disregard for human life. This case will be vigorously prosecuted.”
Two Teens Charged With Fatal Carjacking of Elmhurst Dad
Two teenagers have been charged with second-degree murder after they went searching for an Asian man to rob and ended up choking the life out of their eventual victim, whom they left on the side of the road. After committing a similar robbery a month ago, 16-year-old Corey Azor and 17-year-old Chris Levy were hunting for a new target in Flushing, where the two attend high school (in separate schools). They came upon 49-year-old David Kao, who was dozing off in the driver's seat of an SUV while parked on the street. According to the News, Levy admitted to cops that "he and Azor climbed into the car, put Kao into a choke hold and dragged him into the backseat, where they beat him until he was unconscious." They then took his credit cards and dumped him out a few blocks away.
Husband Charged with Murder After False Carjacking Report
Police have charged a Maryland man for the murder of his wife after he had claimed that the two of them were carjacked while driving home from Brooklyn along the NJ Turnpike. 26-year-old Serika Dunkley Holness was found in the couple's blue Honda Accord along the side of the road in Crumpton, MD with stab wounds and fractured ribs yesterday morning. 28-year-old Ryan Holness told police that a masked assailant carjacked the couple at a gas station along the Turnpike and had them drive him to Marlyand, where the supposed attacker bound him in duct tape and left him on the side of the road. A man who eventually helped him and called police said that Holness did not know how he got to Maryland and the carjacker had hit him in the groin. The couple, who were married in Jamaica two years ago, had a home in Brooklyn as well as in Maryland and were returning from a visit with Serika Holness's aunt in Canarsie.
NJ Carjacker Texts For Forgiveness
MyFox New York spoke to a NJ woman who was carjacked by a gun-wielding man at the Jersey Gardens Mall over the weekend. The woman, who decided to take a break from studying for her medical board exams by shopping, was forced back into the car but she jumped out when he started to drive: "The thief made off with her car, purse, and cell phone. The victim's boyfriend sent a text message to the phone and incredibly, the carjacker responded, begging forgiveness. He claimed he did it to feed his kids."
Carjacked Kids Make it Home
On Tuesday night, a pair of siblings were abducted when a carjacker stole the livery cab they were in. The cab driver had been helping their mother unload some packages when a man took off in the cab on Tinton Avenue in the Bronx. NY1 reports the 4-year-old boy was "dropped off about a block away at 166th Street and Tinton Avenue and was able to walk home" while his 7-year-old sister was dropped off half a mile away--"Fortunately, she remembered her address and phone number and came across three girls who walked her home." The police are still looking for the cabjacker and the taxi.
