Like Phish and Paul McCartney have in the past, Jay-Z was scheduled to perform on top of the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater during Monday night's rush hour, but the performance (part of the rapper's Letterman appearance) was canceled at the last minute. A source told the NY Post it was an abrupt cancellation that came after weeks of planning, and word is "Bloomberg canceled the concert for security reasons after Drake's free concert" at the South Street Seaport earlier this week. more ›

Mayor Bloomberg has laid down the official word on a rumored concert in Queens by the rapper he calls "50 Cents" [sic]. At a press conference he said the rapper "has no plans to perform whatsoever. He might go, but he's not going to perform." The surprise performance was supposed to take place later this month on Family Day at the P.S. 40 school (just blocks from where 50 Cent was nearly fatally shot in 2002). Prior to the attention this was given in the press yesterday, the rapper did have an ad on his website advertising the performance, which has since disappeared. The NY Post reports that the NYPD "were still under the impression as late as Friday that he would be performing—and had yet to be told otherwise even as of yesterday." When asked if he was going to the concert, the Mayor said, "I did not plan to go to the concert because I wanted to go see 50 Cents [sic] and will not get a chance to do that this time." Perhaps he should head to New Jersey the day before! Since, allegedly, the rapper won't be performing in Queens, the paper notes that he'll "bus neighborhood children to his performance at Six Flags amusement park on August 29th." This morning the NYC Office of Emergency Management announced that "a P-3 Orion reconnaissance military plane will fly down and back up the Hudson River between the hours of 10:30 to 11:30 a.m." Coming as it does after the Air Force One photo-op debacle, the fly-by must have been for a pretty important reason, right? Well, the Post has it that it was arranged as a retirement present from a Naval base in Maine to a "veteran aviator." Apparently, the FAA had approved the request months ago and informed the city at that time, but had not specified the date until this morning. The Bloomberg administration says they didn't ask for the flight to be canceled, but informed the FAA that it would have been nice to have a little more notice to prepare New Yorkers for additional traumatic 9/11 flashbacks. After the NYC Office of Emergency Management announced the flyby, the FAA reversed itself and revoked permission for the flight, the AP reports. FAA party-poopers reportedly told commanders at Naval Air Station Brunswick that they couldn't risk further public panic for the sake of a going-away party. more ›

Attention passengers: The next stop on this westbound 7 train extension will not be 10th Avenue and 41st Street. Due to a sick economy, MTA officials will bypass plans for a 10th Avenue station. However, they're still going through with building a new station at 34th Street and 11th Avenue to accommodate the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. City Room reports that last fall the MTA signed a $1.14 billion contract with a company to dig a new 7 train tunnel and build the 34th Street station; a second station at 41st and 10th would have cost $450 million, and officials say the budget won't allow it. The city defended the change, explaining that "a 10th Avenue station is not necessary to drive growth there." But Andrew Albert of the NYC Transit Riders Council scoffs to NY1: "Is that the only reason we build subway stations now, to spur development? How about to serve the people that are already in a neighborhood?" The extension is expected to be finished in 2013. Please be patient. more ›

After Boy George's visa was denied he spoke out on the problem that could put a glitch in his touring plans. The U.S. State Dept. also told their side of the story, and in the end The Man won. A press release sent out this morning stated that his tour, which included a special concert for the New York Department of Sanitation workers and families this summer, was canceled as a result of the problem. George stated, “I was really hoping that the issue would be resolved and that some kind soul at the US Visa Office would realize that if the police in the UK placed no restrictions on my movements, that should have been good enough for them. I am very sorry that I will not see all my American fans this year, but I wish them a happy and healthy Fourth of July. I include the Visa Office in those good wishes and realize they are doing a very difficult job and I just got unlucky.” Those wishing to see him in the U.S. will have to wait until Winter 2009! more ›
