The CQ Press's annual study of U.S. crime statistics shows that Camden, NJ is no longer the most dangerous city in the country—it's just the second most dangerous city. St. Louis, MO, with 2,070.1 violent crimes per 100,000 residents was #1 (the national average is 429.4). Other cities in the top five are Michigan's Detroit and Flint and Oakland, CA. The safest city? Colonie, NY. NYC is #256 while Newark, NJ is #29. Of course, the FBI and other agencies have denounced the study's methodology. more ›

NY, NJ Longshoremen On Strike

To support fellow longshoremen on strike in Camden, NJ, port workers in Elizabeth, Newark and Bayonne in N.J. and in Staten Island and Brooklyn refused to cross picket lines. The Daily News reports, "The work stoppage froze all cargo coming in and out of facilities operated by the Port of New York and New Jersey. The International Longshoremen's Association said the job action was not sanctioned and that union members were acting on their own." A federal judge also ordered the longshoremen men back to work, but they are still on strike. The strike by the Camden workers is over work being moved to a non-union facility in Gloucester, NJ. more ›

Is the Big Apple Big Enough for Princess Chunk?

What's good is that it will draw attention to the Camden County Animal Shelter, which says, "Princess Chunk as well as over 300 dogs and cats in our care need your support. Please consider donating to help offset the costs of her veterinary care and bloodwork." Donations will also go to other special needs animals, like the Princess. The Courier-Post reports the shelter believes Princess Chunk is healthy, but the cat will have bloodwork done on Monday; a vet says Princess Chunk "may suffer from a genetic predisposition to obesity, a poor diet or other underlying medical factors." The average cat is closer to 10-12 pounds (different breeds' weights vary, though). more ›
