Time to talk about putting armed guards in Newark restaurants after 9 p.m. again? On Saturday night the city of Newark saw its 12th homicide of the year when an armed gunman entered the Golden Pizzeria and Grill around 11:13 p.m. Saturday night, hopped over the counter and shot 55-year-old father of six Calvin Johnson twice in the chest. Johnson, who was just finishing his shift, was pronounced dead soon after.
Newark Pizza Man Shot Down In Cold Blood
Calvin Johnson, Guide
When we first called the K Records offices to speak with the label's founder, Calvin Johnson, we were told that he was out to lunch. When asked when he might be back, the assistant responded, "Well, it doesn't get any more random than Calvin." We finally did get a hold of him a little over a week ago, just before he went on tour with his newest band, The Hive Dwellers, who along with Chain & the Gang will be doing a Todd P show tomorrow night at 92Y Tribeca. Calvin has been attributed many titles over the years: frontman of Beat Happening and The Halo benders, president of influential indie label K Records, forefather of the DIY movement. So we asked him just what moniker he'd like to be credited for in this interview. He thought about it for a while and then simply requested, "Guide." It's a role the he's played for a lot of us.
Waiting Game for Locals at the NFL Draft
The NFL Draft starts at noon today and the local teams will have to wait a long time to pick. With the Giants at 20 and the Jets at 25, we probably won’t see a local team pick until well after 4pm. The time may benefit both clubs, because each has very distinct needs they need to fill today and tomorrow.
Halloween Music Picks
Happy Halloween! If you missed the Mountain Goats Saturday night at Bowery Ballroom, you've got another chance to catch them tonight at the even cozier Knitting Factory. This show is extra exciting thanks to the packed lineup of not-to-be-missed opening bands. We're talking about Grizzly Bear (read the Gothamist interview) and The Tears & Prayers of Arthur Digby Sellers (as seen in Gothamist Does CMJ).
Baby in a Gift Bag Found in Brooklyn
A newborn baby girl was found in a gift bag that was hanging on a chain link fence in Brooklyn. The girl, about a week or so old, is in stable condition, but the residents in Bushwick who found the baby were surprised that someone could leave the baby this way. There were a few interesting quotes. Karen Vaughan, who found the baby while heading to a store for cigarettes at 4AM, told the NY Times, "I was like, 'Yo, look, a baby.'" Another man, Calvin Johnson, who also found the baby, told the Daily News, "I'm very distraught. But I feel very proud that God put me to walk that street this morning and just to go get a beer and get some chips and to save her." Another resident told the Times, "I'd like to give [the mother] a nice beating." Police are looking for the mother, and Brooklyn DA Chester Hynes emphasized that babies should be taken to "any firehouse, police station, or hospital...The baby will be okay and no questions will be asked."
