A 23-year-old Long Island man being investigated for a burglary was shot to death by police yesterday after he charged officers with a foot-long knife. Kurt Doerbecker was involved in a standoff with police when he refused to exit his parent’s waterfront home in Point Lookout to speak to them. He was shot several times after he advanced on an officer "in a threatening manner" and refused an order to drop the knife. But Doerbecker's family are upset with cops who they say were "overly agressive." “There were 60 cops and one young man. They shot him dead. But last week they finally caught their first purse snatcher. The Brooklyn Paper reports cops caught a man stealing a woman's purse out of her cart—unaware that the innocent looking shopper was really a cop, who had radioed a description of the suspect to cops waiting outside. “We have to wait for him to leave the store,” said Capt. Police have arrested a 20-year-old found with a ceremonial chalice from St. Helen’s church in Queens. Theodore Kurplewski was picked up at his home, just a few blocks from the holy house, and charged with burglary, possession of stolen property, and criminal mischief, reports the Post. A month ago two chalices—together worth $11,000—went missing from the church. One, worth $10,000 has now been recovered. Rev. Robert Keighron noted that the thief was unlikely to get much for the gold cup since his name was carved in the bottom of it. “The value to [the robbers], I don’t understand,” he told the Queens Courier. “It would seem very hard to sell.” more ›

A thief ransacked a school for autistic children in Staten Island and stole laptops, video games, electronics—as well as a pet hamster, a sock monkey, and a set of rubber ducks. Students at the Eden II School for Children with Autism are shaken, according to executive director Joanne Gerenser, who said kids had made missing posters for the sock monkey and the ducks. When you're robbing apartments on the Upper East Side and the lady of the house catches you in the act, the last thing you expect is for her to play the hero and overpower you. But that was the embarrassing result of ex-con Clarence Cooper's alleged break-in at the East 78th Street apartment of Christine Anderson, a 46-year-old sales manager. When Anderson returned from grocery shopping at 8:50 a.m. Sunday morning to find Cooper rummaging through her first-floor apartment, she went postal, yelling, "What the f- - - are you doing in my apartment?" She tells the Post, "My gut instinct was to defend my home and stick up for myself." After Cooper shoved her aside and ran out, she chased him into the lobby, jumped on his back and tackled him to the ground! That's just how uptown girls roll.
