The Blue Room at City Hall was an especially appropriate setting today for the announcement that the Mets will host the 2013 All-Star Game. Mayor Bloomberg was joined by MLB commissioner Bud Selig, Mets owner Fred Wilpon, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon, MLB Executive Vice President Joe Torre, and Citi Field's most beloved resident Mr. Met to make the announcement. "Competition for All-Star Games over the last five years has been enormous," Selig said during the press conference. "The new ballpark, Citi Field, that was certainly a primary reason for it. It was their time in a new ballpark." more ›

Pokerface: A-Rod Faces Possible Suspension For Illegal Poker

Pokerface: A-Rod Faces Possible Suspension For Illegal Poker

It seems that Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez has been pulled into the Tobey Maguire poker ring mess—MLB is investigating allegations that A-Rod participated in illegal, underground poker games, including one which turned violent. And if Bud Selig doesn't believe A-Rod's pokerface, then it could cost him serious playing time: "We're talking to people involved in the investigation and we're taking this very seriously. Because he had been warned about this before, I would say a possible suspension would be very much in play," an MLB executive told ESPN. more ›

ESPN, MLB Ruin Mets' Little League Event At Citifield

ESPN, MLB Ruin Mets' Little League Event At Citifield

Earlier this season, the Mets got into some trouble after they inadvertently encouraged kids to "play hooky" to come see a game at Citifield. It seems they're having an opposite effect on kids now: this Sunday, before their game against the Atlanta Braves, is their annual Youth Baseball Parade, an opportunity for city little leaguers to march on the field. But because the start time of the game was switched, many of those kids won't be able to stay up and participate, and parents are pissed. And you can blame ESPN and MLB for that. more ›

Wilpons Dealing With Madoff, Mets Fallout

Wilpons Dealing With Madoff, Mets Fallout

The Mets organization has endured a bad week, gracing the Daily News back cover several times with the unfortunate turn of events surrounding the announcement that the Wilpon family, who owns the team, are looking to sell part of the team to offset a lawsuit against them involving their dealings with Bernie Madoff. Fred and Jeff Wilpon met with MLB commissioner Bud Selig yesterday to discuss the worsening financial state of the team, and it seems he's been watching their backs for awhile; Selig reportedly encouraged Sandy Alderson to take the job as GM of the Mets, one he wouldn't have accepted without his encouragement. So how much are the Wilpons financial troubles going to cause for the team? more ›

Yanks Give Fans Yom Kippur Reprieve, Almost No Prayer With World Series Tix

Yanks Give Fans Yom Kippur Reprieve, Almost No Prayer With World Series Tix

The upcoming Yom Kippur sure has been a day of atonement for event planners. After an official protest from Congressman Anthony Weiner, Major League Baseball and ESPN have switched back the starting time of the final regular season Yankees-Red Sox matchup September 27th, that originally had been moved to after sundown on the high holy day so that it could reach a wider television audience. The brouhaha over the conflict comes on the heels of both the Jets and U2 having to scramble their schedules for the same reason. more ›

MLB Investigates A-Rod (Again) as Girardi's Had Enough

MLB Investigates A-Rod (Again) as Girardi's Had Enough

The new accusations against A-Rod in the upcoming biography on him—that he used steroids while on the Yankees and tipped off pitches to opposing players—are now being looked into by Major League Baseball. Officials had already met with A-Rod to ask questions soon after his initial admissions of using illegal steroids while with Texas Rangers. A sports law expert told the Times, “The last thing (Commissioner Bud Selig) wants is for someone else, like the federal government or Congress, to try and intercede and take this matter out of his hands.” more ›

MLB Head Selig No Bud of A-Rod and Players

MLB Head Selig No Bud of A-Rod and Players

It took Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig longer to respond to Alex Rodriguez's admission that he had taken steroids than it did for A-Rod to come forward after the allegations surfaced—and Selig didn't even have to rush back from canoodling in the Bahamas (we hope). Selig released a statement today saying, "What Alex did was wrong and he will have to live with the damage he has done to his name and reputation." In an interview with USA Today, Selig also hinted at his possible desire to suspend A-Rod (despite having no grounds to do so) as well as reinstating Hank Aaron as the home run record holder because of the steroid scandal (only to have an MLB rep quickly take that idea off the table). While many have pointed the figure to baseball's lax role as a factor in the course of the scandal, Selig chose to focus on the fact that A-Rod had not taken steroids since the MLB's anti-doping policy went into effect in 2004 and pointed the finger at the Players' Union saying that the formation of said policy "received no cooperation from the Players Assn. and virtually none from the players." more ›

The Juice is Loose: Giambi to Talk About 'Roids

I will continue to do what I think is right and be candid about my past history regarding steroids. I have never blamed anyone nor intended to deflect blame for my conduct. I alone am responsible for my actions and I apologize to the commissioner, the owners and the players for any suggestion that they were responsible for my behavior. more ›

Last Night's Action: Eight Is Great

  • Yankees 7 Arizona 2: It took 60-something games, but the Yankees are finally playing like everyone thought they would from the beginning. A punishing lineup and solid starting pitching have finally shown up at the same time and the result is an eight-game winning streak. more ›

An All Star Last Stand for Yankee Stadium

An All Star Last Stand for Yankee Stadium

For Yankee Stadium's last year - before a new park - Major League Baseball will be having the 2008 All Star Game in The House that Babe Built. MLB Commissioner Bud Selig said, "One of the biggest factors was George Steinbrenner. He has made wonderful contributions to this city and to the Yankees. Clearly one of the primary factors was to honor the city, the franchise and George Steinbrenner." Man, Selig makes it sound like Steinbrenner's going to die at some point! But we suppose MLB wants to honor Steinbrenner for driving up salaries so much. The Boss, who wasn't at the City Hall press conference, said he was touched. more ›

Mets Delgot-it

Mets Delgot-it

It looks like the quest for a big bat in the middle of the lineup is coming close to for the Mets. Newsday is reporting that the Mets and Marlins have agreed to a trade for Carlos Delgado. The Mets would ship minor-league pitching prospect Yusmeiro Petit and 1st baseman Mike Jacobs for Delgado and $7 million to help cover the remaining $48 million over 3 years. The players involved in the deal still need to pass physicals and Bud Selig also needs to approve it. more ›
