If pillow fights, Jedi duels, flash mobs, or not wearing pants on the subway are all not your thing, perhaps you'll find joy in the annual Bubble Battle, returning to the city June 18th. Or perhaps you'll be repulsed by the idea like one Gothamist staffer who audibly sighed upon hearing the news that strangers will gather en masse to blow magical, shiny little bubbles all over Times Square. Because, the horror, right? Here's the scoop, from organizers at Newmindspace:
Annual Bubble Battle Returns This June!
Bubble Battle Descends on Times Square
With all the crime and corruption in this city, it's nice to know that sometimes all you need is a flash mob armed with soapy water to brighten your day. Brought to you by the same folks responsible for the Jedi Battle and the Union Square Pillow Fight, Bubble Battle NYC 2010 gathered at Father Duffy Square yesterday with bubble toys, bubble guns and plenty of bubble solution to launch a harmless attack on the city. Newmindspace says the event is "loosely based on the Dr. Seuss Classic The Butter Battle Book." We're glad they stuck with bubbles—butter would have been a lot harder to clean up!
Bubble Battle Burst in Times Square
Saturday as the Mermaid Parade finished marching through Coney Island, the Bubble Battle was going down in Times Square. It seems to have outgrown the previous year's location of Astor Place, as thousands showed up and millions of bubbles floated around the Crossroads of the World (video after the jump).
