- Yankees 5, Orioles 4: The Yankees won their fifth game in a row Friday night with a 9th inning victory over the Orioles. Randy Johnson allowed four runs over his six inning outing, but didn't strike out a single batter for the second game in a row - only the second time that has happened in his career. The Yankees jumped to an early lead on a solo home run by Johnny Damon in the 1st and added to their lead with two runs in the 2nd. After the Orioles took the lead in the 5th, the Yankees tied it in the 7th. The score remained tied until Jorge Posada hit his 14th home run of the season. Before the game, the Yankees optioned designated Bubba Crosby for assignment and added another arm to the bullpen. The win keeps the Yankees a game ahead of the Red Sox for the AL East lead.

-Red Sox 9 Yankees 3: For five innings it seemed like the Yankees might pull off an improbable sweep. They led Boston 3-1 heading into the sixth, but Jaret Wright suddenly lost control of his fastball and Boston jumped all over him and two subsequent relievers to cruise to a 9-3 victory. The loss leaves New York with a ½ game lead in the AL East.

Rush & Molloy theorize how the Yankees won against the Oakland A's the other weekend - it was because Athletics' players Nick Swisher and Joe Blanton (who wasn't pitching) went to Plumm in the Meatpacking district, ordering $1,000 of vodka (which means 2 bottles) and "helped close the bar." That's a new, subversive angle for the NYC Nightlife Association to bring to community boards - "We're here to souse visiting sports teams' players!" Then again, maybe going out so much isn't that good an idea, as Rush & Molly also point out that Yankees Derek Jeter, Johnny Damon and Bubba Crosby were at 40/40 Club and all were only okay the next day. We bet George Steinbrenner will have a talking-to with them this morning!

The Yankees may have lost one international star, but they still have plenty left. Friday night, it was the hero of Taiwan, Chien-Ming Wang, who picked up the team. Wang was brilliant over eight innings, throwing only 85 pitches while facing one batter over the minimum in New York’s 2-0 victory.

They had said it so often that you had to begin to believe it. “Bubba Crosby will be our centerfielder in 2006.” The Red Sox made a big trade, the Mets made big trades and signed Billy Wagner and nothing happened in the Bronx. It was getting too quiet.

In the end it was familiar demons, bad starting pitching, shaky defense and a lack of timely hitting that did in the Yankees as they fell to the Angels 5-3. The Angels advance to the ALCS and take on the White Sox starting Tuesday night.

Even though the Yankees are crushing the Red Sox in the standings and can seemingly cruise into October, I have a bone to pick with Mr. Torre. First let me say that I think he is a terrific baseball man, and a great manager. However, when the Yankees got to within one run of tying the game in the bottom of the ninth, Jorge Posada drew a walk with no one out and the Yankees down by one. The next batter, Bernie Williams, who has been on fire of late, did not sacrifice Bubba Crosby (the pinch runner for Posada) to second base. I don't understand this. Why not sacrifice? What is the logic?

It also seems like Captain Derek Jeter is back, going 3-4 last night and 7-15 for the series and boosting his average above the dreaded Mendoza Line from .190 to .211. Gothamist is going to treat this as a sign of Jeter's return to normal and a case reacting to media over-reaction on Monday.

While Contraras pitched poorly, the offense was no better. Derek Jeter, Jason Giambi and Bernie Williams went a combined 1-11, and the Yankees amassed a miniscule 7 hits over 9 innings. There were defensive miscues as well by Bubba Crosby in the 7th and by Gary Sheffield in the 8th, but the game was well over by the time they made their mistakes.
