Site Of Fatal Bronx Fire Had Numerous Illegal Conversion Complaints

Yesterday, two adults and one child died when a fire broke out in their apartment in Belmont, and though investigators don't suspect any criminality, the Department of Buildings says the building received numerous complaints for things like illegal conversion, lack of exits and faulty wiring starting in 2009. The fire has prompted Mayor Bloomberg to go after landlords who illegally subdivide apartment buildings. He said, "In the end, the real people culpable are landlords who break up apartments in the interest of profits and put people that live there at risk...We should go after the landlords and rest assured the city is going to do that." more ›

Former Knick Dean Meminger Remains In Burn Unit

Dean Meminger, the former Knicks great nicknamed "The Dream," is in a burn unit at Jacobi Hospital after suffering injuries from a four-alarm fire in the Bronx. As dozens of people remain homeless after a Sunday four-alarm fire destroyed homes in the Claremont section of the Bronx, now fire officials suspect the fire began from a crack pipe—and many crack pipes were found in a room of an SRO rented by former Knicks great Dean "The Dream" Meminger. Over 100 Fireifghters Battle 4-Alarm Bronx Fire

Around 1:20 a.m. this morning, a fire broke out in a Parkchester apartment building. One resident told WCBS 2, "There was a gentleman running down the street yelling fire and [telling] everybody to get out. I heard the blast - the windows when they blew out. I was already in bed." Two teens and one boy, all of whom had been sleeping, were rescued from the apartment where the fire originated and were taken to the hospital for their minor injuries. The FDNY says they came close to "losing the whole" 6-floor building. more ›
