Broken Angel on the Market, Again

If you were holding out for a Broken Angel condo, better start letting go of the dream. That's what the owners of the building have done—they've just put it all up for sale (again). Brownstoner reports: "A few days ago, they put the 13,000-square-foot property up for sale with no asking price. Interested parties can contact Shahn at 917-627-6454. Given that the new NYT listings site currently returns zero responses to a Clinton Hill search, we're unable to come up with the listing right now!" A sad day, indeed, but not entirely surprising news.

An interesting update about fund-raising efforts for Broken Angel in New York magazine's Intelligencer: It seems that Dave Chappelle and director Michel Gondry have been contacted about doing a benefit at Pratt, but Chris Wood, the son of Broken Angel owners Arthur and Cindy Wood, hadn't heard anything from Chappelle and only "vague" things from Gondry. Gondry's rep, though, tells New York, “Michel would be willing to be of any assistance for the Broken Angel’s home, if he is able. He is open to holding a screening and/or a benefit concert with the Roots and Dave Chappelle to help raise money.” Now, to find out about the Roots's and Chappelle's availability and willingness!

I hope that everyone has had a good beginning to the New Year. I would like to address certain questions and statements that have been posted online as to the fate of Broken Angel. It is true that Broken Angel is for sale. The only financial donation that my parents received was a check for $10.00 and this was never cashed. In addition a small amount of money has been generated from the sale of a few photographs, this money covered the costs of copying the plans for the architects and engineers. The help that we have received has been in the form of various people’s time and expertise and we really do appreciate their efforts. My family and I are very sorry if these generous people feel that their time has been wasted by this experience. We are still trying through the courts to save the building.

Christopher Wood, son of Broken Angel owners/creators Arthur and Cindy Wood, updates what is happening with the 4 Downing Street building in Brooklyn. As the Woods are working with Jordan Parnass Digital Architecture to bring the building to code, there is still a court hearing tomorrow to see if the Department of Buildings has been justified in its actions (the DOB has threatened demolition and removed the Woods from the house).

Chris Wood, the son of the owners of Broken Angel, wrote in with an update on the story:

+ If Mayor Bloomberg sells Bloomberg LP for $12B, do you think they'll change the name of the company?

Well, that was probably inevitable-- after the October 10th fire, the city inspected Broken Angel and declared the building unfit for human habitation. The Times says a lot of work is necessary to bring the building up to code:

Oh damn! The beautiful and strange Broken Angel building in Clinton Hill seems to be on fire! Brooklyn Record has the first shot-- is anyone in the area available to snap a few pictures of the damage? The building is on the corner of Downing and Quincy-- we're not going to be able to bike down there for at least a few hours.

We've long been obsessed with Clinton Hill's Broken Angel building. It sits on the corner of Downing and Quincy, just a few blocks South of Pratt, but it's visible from a bunch of spots around the neighborhood. The building is a work-in-progress by Arthur Wood, a "self-taught" architect and painter. It resembles a Brooklyn tenement version of a Antoni Gaudi building-- compare the exterior to the Sagrada Famiia church, or Casa Battlo in Barcelona. According to this Times article from 2002, Wood bought the building in 1971 for $2000, and has been working on it ever since.
