Last Night's Action: That Would Have Been Bad

  • Devils 4, Blues 3: By the time 62 seconds had elapsed, the Devils held a 1-0 lead. Of course, they still went on to trail after Zach Parise's early strike. They entered the first intermission trailing, 2-1, but Brian Rolston tied it in the second period. Two more goals in the third put the game out of reach.
  • Lakers 116 Knicks 114: The Knicks led the Lakers by 15 at the half, but Los Angeles cut that to 4 at the end of 3 quarters. The two teams traded baskets down the stretch, but Trevor Ariza (remember him Knicks' fans?) put the Lakers ahead for good with a layup and Derek Fisher hit three free throws down the stretch to win the game. Stephon Marbury was at the game — not as a starter, not on the bench, but as a spectator at the Staples Center!

  • has 97 career shutouts. That is six shy of the record set by Terry Sawchuk.

The NHL season starts a little earlier than usual for our local teams. The Rangers are opening their season in Prague this weekend with two sold-out games against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Islanders and Devils open up against each other next week. For all three teams, the expectations are very different.
