- Devils 4, Hurricanes 1: Martin Brodeur only needed to make 20 saves in this one. The Devils have now won seven of nine. Travis Zajac, Brian Gionta and Sergei Brylin all had goals, but it was Patrik Elias scoring the game-winner for the second straight time. They could have had six goals had they not hit the post twice. That fatigue-induced slow start is a distant memory for New Jersey, which leads the Atlantic Division.
- Flyers 6, Rangers 2: When Ryan Hollweg scored two early goals, something had to tell the Rangers this wasn't a typical game. Then, poof! Bad news comes in threes, and it came in threes times two at the Garden. Henrik Lundqvist made it the whole game despite allowing one sixth of all the shots he faced in. Montreal visits New York on Saturday night.
- Devils 2, Sabres 1 (SO): Aggressive play cost the Devils the win in regulation, but Martin Brodeur, Brian Gionta and Patrik Elias too center stage in the shootout to allow the Devils to continue their home dominance. They have picked up 21 of 22 points at their new Prudential Center in the last 11 games. Things didn't look so rosy when Jason Pominville tied the game with 1:47 to go, but the Devils bounced back. They held out during Buffalo's dominance of the extra session to make use of Brodeur in the shootout.
- Lightning 5, Rangers 3: Spotting the Lightning a three-goal lead didn't seem to be a good move. After Jaromir Jagr opened the scoring, Tampa Bay struck for four straight, and the Rangers couldn't recover.
- Canucks 3, Islanders 2 (SO): The Islanders can't be happy they traveled all the way to the Pacific Northwest only to see that second point disappear after a goal between the legs of Rick DiPietro. But he can't be blamed for this loss. His 43 saves were the only reason the Islanders made it to the extra session and the shootout.
Things got testy at the end of the game as Shane Doan took a swipe at the puck after Rick DiPietro had saved it and a scrum erupted behind the net. Doan took the worst of it penalty wise as he received a game misconduct.
Suns 115, Knicks 104: The Knicks need wins, yes, but they also need solid efforts against the league's elite teams. They got the latter but not the former Sunday in a loss to Phoenix at home. Eddy Curry's 21 points and an awakening from a recent slump couldn't power the Knicks, who stuck around for three quarters before disappearing in the fourth. Even Stephon Marbury enjoyed an efficient night from the floor -- he shot...
Knicks 85 Chicago 78: Seriously, that isn’t a misprint, the Knicks won the game! Afterwards, while the fans stormed the court and the tickertape rained down, Isiah Thomas took a minute to point out that everyone was wrong about him and that this triumph was his vindication. Ok, it didn’t quite happen that way, but based on some of the reaction you had to assume that the Knicks had actually won a big game, rather...
For some inexplicable reason, the NHL has scheduled all three local clubs to start their playoff chase tonight and to overlap with each other most nights. Because of that, fans of the various teams should get to know this website to figure out where they can watch the games.
Besides the inspired play of Crawford, the Knicks finally made a lineup change. Jared Jeffries was sent to the bench and Channing Frye got the start. Jeffries only played 15 minutes while Frye played 37 and David Lee 29 coming off the bench. Hopefully, Isiah has finally realized that Frye and Lee deserve the time more than Jeffries.
The Rangers are not going to sneak up on anyone this year. Last year, they were the surprise of the league, surging to first place in the Atlantic Division before collapsing late in the season to lose the division and get swept out of the playoffs. In the offseason they added players who know how to win in Brendan Shanahan, Aaron Ward and Matt Cullen to their solid core of Jagr, Nylander, Lundqvist, Straka and Prucha. Expect them to return to the playoffs and advance a couple of rounds.
If you watched the last two weeks of the NHL season you wouldn’t expect much out of this matchup. The Devils are playing their best hockey of the season, winning 11 straight and charging to the top of the Atlantic Division. Meanwhile, the Rangers were stumbling all over the place, dropping five straight and choking away a division championship. Today the slate is wiped clean as the two teams meet in the playoffs for the fourth time with the Rangers holding a 3-0 series lead.
Trottier, Smith, Bossy, Potvin, the great names of the Islanders’ past came together last night for a celebration of their 1980 Stanley Cup championship. While seeing all the past greats was a thrill for the fans, the current Islanders looked pretty good too. Chris Campoli scored the game-winner midway through the third period and Trent Hunter added an empty-net goal to give New York a 4-2 victory over Philadelphia.
The Islanders rebounded from their worst loss of the season to beat Chicago 2-1 in overtime last night. Rick DiPietro who had been pulled in the second period of Saturday’s game made 34 saves, several of them spectacular to keep New York in the game. Oleg Kvasha took advantage of a rebound to stuff home the game winner.
The Rangers have hit their first rough patch of the season. After coming home from a successful road trip, they dropped one-goal games to Vancouver and Colorado before losing to New Jersey 3-1 last night. The loss leaves the Rangers with a one point lead over second place Philadelphia.
Yesterday, an emotional Larry Robinson discussed stepping down has head coach of the Devils on Sunday. Citing health reasons, including severe headaches, Robinson, 54, ended his second stint as the Devils' coach. Replacing Robinson in the interim is Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello. Robinson, a hall of fame player, won six championships with the Montreal Canadians and one with the Devils in 2000 as their head coach. The Devils, who have struggled this season, are 14-13-5 and in 4th in the Atlantic division.
