There's nothing like a real-life heartwarming tale around the holidays. This feelgood story happened in Queens and involves a 92-year-old woman, a 24-year-old store supermarket clerk and a discarded scratch-off lottery ticket. NY1 and the Post report on Mary Alice Fallon, who is now a millionaire.

The Coast Guard helped a Manhattan man whose boat had capsized in the waters near Breezy Point. But that was actually the second time he had been rescued: The Coast Guard said a Good Samaritan had helped him out of the waters, only for 45-year-old David Cherner to dive back into the water for personal items. Petty Office 2nd Class Tom Leggett said, "He wasn't wearing a lifejacket, and this could have easily taken a turn for the worse. Lifejackets should be readily accessible for situations like this because they greatly improve your chances of survival."

  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a shooting on Sutter Ave. in Brooklyn, a water rescue off the Breezy Point Jetty in Queens, and a missing child on East 178th St. in the Bronx.
  • Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum is upset that Coney Island native and Knicks star Stephon Marbury donated 3,000 pairs of his new Starbury basketball shoes to male high school basketball teams, while ignoring the female players.
  • The Brooklyn Paper reports that the Lincoln Plaza Hotel, which was advertised as a bed and breakfast but in reality was a by-the-hour brothel, is being renovated into luxury condos. Well-heeled eventual residents should not be expecting a welcome wagon, because neighbors are complaining they'd rather have a whorehouse on their street than rich condo-owners.
  • Leona Helmsley moved into her final residence today: a 1,300 square foot space that featues stained glass windows with skyline views and 12 granite columns. The mausoleum is located in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Westchester.
  • The Dept. of Health reported that of the 800,000 smoking New Yorkers who tried to quit the habit in the last year, only 17% were successful. Quitting aids like nicotine gum and patches will be distributed at the Whitehall Ferry Terminal Tuesdays through Thursdays from 3pm to 6pm for the next five weeks.
  • The Gowanus Lounge has an update on the state of negotiations between vendors at the Red Hook ballfields and the Dept. of Health.
  • SPIN has a page of photos and video of this summer's McCarren Park Pool Party concert.
  • The manufacturers of Krasdale Gravy dry dog food are saying that some of their 5 lb. bags of dog food may be contaminated with salmonella. They are instructing to toss the food out and bring the bags back to the point of purchase for a refund. The tainted food was sold in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania and the packaging has the UPC code 7513062596.

  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a boat in distress off the Breezy Point Jetty in Queens, a bank robbery on 14th St. and 5th Ave. in Brooklyn, and a stabbing on East 115th St. in Manhattan.
  • Jay Jay French, the guitarist for Twisted Sister, is upset that an Upper West Side Florist that's been in the neighborhood for 87 years is being forced to move to New Jersey due to higher rents.
  • Living With Legends: Hotel Chelsea Blog posts that board member David Elder called the NYPD bomb squad to the hotel after receiving what he deemed a suspicious package. It was suspicious in that it didn't contain a bomb, but a fish head.
  • All is not serene at the Hare Krishna Sanctuary on 1st Ave. between 1st and 2nd Sts., as one group of followers is attempting to evict another group.
  • Bruce Ratner may lose $100 million in city subsidies for his Atlantic Yards project unless drastic revisions are made to the conditions of the tax breaks.

  • ConEd announced that it would pay businesses for any physical damages caused by last week's steam explosion, but won't pay anything for lost business while the frozen zone around the blast site was being cleaned.

WCBS 880 reports that an oil tanker, the White Sea, has run aground in the Ambrose Channel, which is a shipping channel south of Lower New York Bay, off Staten Island, Coney Island, Breezy Point and NJ's Sandy Hook. The Coast Guard says that there are no reports of injuries.

Off-duty firefighter Lt. Charles Marshall was windsurfing off Breezy Point yesterday, but a riptide swept him into the cold waters. When his friends realized he was missing, they called 911. The NYPD's Air and Sea Rescue team searched for him for a while before one officer saw Marshall "bobbing in 6- to 8-foot-high waves."

A 21 year old New School student who loved fishing is feared to have drowned during a father-son fishing trip on Breezy Point in the Rockaways. Strong waves apparentedly swept 21 year old Karl Heinzen of Brooklyn off a jetty and into the water yesterday morning. His father tried to save him, but Jerome Heinzen was pushed by the waves as well and needed to be rescued by NYPD divers responding to the call. The crew of a charter boat, the Dorothy B., also tried to rescue Karl, but Jerome Heinzen said, "They almost saved him; they were so close. I can see him reaching for a buoy, but by that time he was probably too tired."
