To get Johnson, the Yankees shipped Javier Vazquez, Brad Halsey, Dioner Navarro, and $9 million in caaaash money. The Daily News reports that the trade will push the Yankee payroll over $200 million with pitching accounting for nearly $100 million. Is this just the rich get richer or a pitching renaissance in New York with Pedro and Randy? Of course, the Yankees still have to beat the Red Sox.

Not everything went so smoothly though. As is becoming the norm in this series, tempers rose during the game, resulting in ejections and bench clearing. First came Kenny Lofton and Doug Mientkiewicz in the third inning. The two had some issues as Lofton grounded out and Mientkiewicz supposedly didn't get out of Lofton's way quickly enough. Then, in the 8th, Pedro Astacio threw the ball behind Lofton, which got him ejected. In retaliation, Brad Halsey threw a ball high and tight to Dave Roberts, which got him and Joe Torre ejected. The benches cleared and words were exchanged, but there were no fisticuffs.

The Yankees had every right for being upset that the Devil Rays did not show up on Monday in time for the double-header, but asking for a forfeit is not the Yankee way. It shows signs of frustration and worst of all desperation.

In yesterday's 10-8 matinee loss to the Tigers, the Yankees once again dug themselves into a hole early in the game. This time the hole was just to much to dig out of.

Mussina gave up seven runs in six innings. In Mussina's last two starts, against the Mets and Tigers, he is 0-2 with a 9.82 ERA. In the two games against the Devil Rays, he is 0-2 with an ERA of 11.00. Not really the numbers of an ace, are they? Last night the tigers were able to run away with the game and win 9-1. Jason Johnson pitched 8 strong innings to move his record to 6-7, allowing one run on six hits.

After a disappointing Subway Series for the Bronx Bombers, the Yankees came home to face the Detroit Tigers in a three games series. The Yanks won the opening game in the series 10-3, with the long ball and solid pitching. The game was 7-0 after two innings, but that did not keep things from getting interesting.

The Yankees came into the series with a five and a half game lead over the Red Sox, by the first pitch on Thursday night, that lead was seven and a half games. It was a must win game for The Red Sox and their ace Pedro Martinez took the hill. Pedro picked up where he left off last year. After Gary Sheffield disrupted Pedro's focus by calling for time, Pedro plunked him with the baseball. After that, you could almost feel the air turn into the crisp October air this game deserved.

Saturday's victory came on a virtual offensive explosion by the Mets. In the fourth inning, the Mets had 6 runs, a season high, and had thoughts of a possible series victory in The Bronx. Mets Catcher, Jason Phillips said, "It's Yankee Stadium, it's the Yankees, and we were 0-6 against them last year. This is the first time I ever beat them. I can finally say I did it. Now let's go do it again." Unfortunately for the Mets, the Yankees turned the tables on Sunday.

Derek Jeter sums up the Series succinctly, "Yes, it's great for the city. No, it's not like it was during (the World Series) in 2000. No, it's not that much different than any other game. Does that cover it?" As much as Gothamist loves the games, we're also kind of tired of them. It's not much of a rivalry if one team is getting smoked every year, if the teams aren't fighting against each other for anything, if the players view the games as ordinary, or if the players are all chummy. While both fans on both sides may hate each other, these games have little meaning in the AL and NL East.

The Yanks ended up dropping two of three in their weekend series with the Dodgers. Javier Vasquez lost the series opener 6-3 (box score) to former Yankee Jeff Weaver. After Weaver gave up three runs in the first inning, he settled down and held the Yankees scoreless for the next five innings. Eric Gagne came in to nail down the victory in the 9th.

Two games later, Mike Mussina injured his groin and was pulled after three innings. It looks like Mussina is only going to miss one start and should be back on the mound on Tuesday to face the Baltimore Orioles, his former team. So with two of the five starters out of the rotation where does that leave the Bombers?
