It's time to start polishing up your leaving-work-early excuses, because CMJ is just around the corner. This means day shows, night shows, after parties and nearly every space downtown turning into a venue for the week.

We've already announced day one and day two for Gothamist House, and here comes number three. As a reminder, this year WOXY will be broadcasting from the space -- so if you find yourself at work you'll still be able to listen in! At the end of the week stay tuned for a Best of Gothamist House podcast, also provided by WOXY. Now, without further ado:

The countdown prompted us to start working on our own CMJ-week event a bit early this year. So we'd like to announce that Gothamist House will be back! Since we had a great time there last year it will be at White Rabbit on East Houston Street again from October 17th to 20th (running from 2pm to around 8:30pm). Last year we had some great bands play, including Loney, Dear, Apples in Stereo, Charles Bissell of the Wrens, Bound Stems, Land of Talk, Pela and a whole lot more.

PARTY: What's the holiday season without awkward office parties? Metro Metro is having their office party tonight, think of it as more of a Christopher Guest version of the office party. A mockumentary, if you will. Nametags and job titles will be assigned at the door! Dress code: office holiday attire.

THEATER: Dance-theatre maverick Pina Bausch returns to the Brooklyn Academy of Music with Nefés, which is described as an ode to Istanbul, 'the city of water'. Originally conceived in 2002, Nefés (Turkish for "breath") “quickly became a life-affirming response to Istanbul's bouts with political upheaval. But rather than echoing the violence, Bausch invests her signature humor and emotional pathos with an acute sense of calm. Set to an eclectic score featuring Turkish songs, tangos from Astor Piazzolla, and classical guitar, Nefés also features massive video screens with which the performers interact.” - John Del Signore

We were caught a bit off guard the last time we caught Rahim live. It was a different band than we remembered. We knew the keyboard player was different, and there were suddenly 4 people on stage. All said, we liked them just fine before, but they sounded absolutely fantastic this time. For once, an added member really completed the sound, rather than acting as a tacked on distraction (See: The Thermals, CMJ). Not exactly sure if was a permanent member or simply a guest sitting in, since as far as we can tell the band is officially a three-piece and a quick scan down their livejournal tour diary would lead one to believe that they just had many friends join them on their many tour stops. Whatever the explanation, the band is performing at the highest level we've ever seen them at right now, and we expect them to carry the momentum into this Sunday's show at Northsix. They’re playing with one of our favorites of 2006, Bound Stems.

After months of preparation, the first day of The Gothamist House at The White Rabbit is finally here! Surely you know the drill by now...Great bands, cheap drinks, thanks to the White Rabbit extending their Happy Hour throughout the day, and completely, no strings attached free to attend. So swing by the spot at 145 East Houston (Between Eldridge and Forsyth) and come say hi!

DISCUSSION: A performance artist, an art critic, an art scholar, a restaurateur, and a gallery owner all walk in to a bar...Oh wait, that's not the beginning of a joke. Those creative types will all be at The New Museum tonight though for their Hot Button! discussion series. Find out their motivation behind the craft. What will win, love or money?

Today is officially the first day of CMJ! Starting this afternoon and going strong through the weekend, every music club in the city is going to be jam packed with hours upon hours of the hottest up and coming bands from all over the world. Seeing that we'd expect your regular Gothamist reader won't be equipped with a $500 badge, we decided to highlight some of the standout free events this week. While you will still be able to get into nearly all the night showcases by paying at the door, many of these bands will be playing for free anyway while they're in town.

7:30 - TBA!

ART: Local artist Jen Dunlap is having an art show tonight. It's called Yeep! Yeep!, so it's sure to be fun. Check out her work here, then head over there to see it all up close, while enjoying some free drinks!

THEATER: Previews start tonightfor the first U.S. production of Australian Gordon Graham's play The Boys, ferried here across the bigger pond by Outhouse Theatre Co. The title characters aren't boys in age, but they certainly are in their attitudes toward women: at a party celebrating one man's release from jail, he and two buddies grow increasingly angry at their girlfriends, and leave in a misogynistic huff. The next day a woman is found raped and murdered -- was it them? The play should provoke plenty of heated -- but hopefuly not too heated -- discussion among audience members. - Mallory Jensen
