Daily News Editor Martin Dunn Steps Down

New York Daily News editor-in-chief Martin Dunn announced he is stepping down today. He told Media Decoder (which characterized the news as "unexpected") that he will be spending time with his family and taking care of his wife, who has cancer, "She has an illness that is going to take us many months to get over, and I want to spend as much time as I can with her. The demands of running a tabloid newspaper in a city with a tabloid war are enormous. And if you can’t spend every ounce of energy doing that then unfortunately you don’t feel as though the paper is getting the best of you." more ›

Speculation About Murder Suspect Continues

Speculation About Murder Suspect Continues

The Falls' bouncer, Darryl Littlejohn, continues to be the center of the police investigation of Imette St. Guillen's murder. In fact, the Daily News says that police consider him their "only suspect." Littlejohn is being held at Rikers Island, but not for anything related to the St. Guillen murder (he's just person a interest, still not arrested or charged) - he's there for violating his parole, as his past crimes have given him a 9PM-7AM curfew where he may not be on the streets. Since a parole hearing would take up to 90 days, the police and ME's office probably have enough time to investigate all the evidence, including the Littlejohn's minivan, as well as clothing including white socks from his home (St. Guillen was found with a white sock in her mouth). Neighbors are describing him as being intimidating, one neighbor recounting, "He said, 'I'm bipolar. Sometimes, something that happened yesterday, I won't remember.'" more ›

Head of Ted in Chelsea

Head of Ted in Chelsea

In the spirit of this weekend's Yankees-Red Sox series, Gothamist suggests you go to the First Street Gallery in Chelsea to visit sculptor Daniel Edwards's death masks of Ted Williams. The Baseball Hall of Fame Red Sox legend who batted .406 in the 1941 season became more famous in his after life when it turned out his head had been cut off when he was cryogenically frozen. Edwards had spent time with Williams (while he was alive) and felt the decapitation was a horror. So he decided to create three death masks of Williams, plus show them with various other paraphenalia (a Life magazine, a jersey) and call it the "The Ted Williams Memorial Display with Death Mask from The Ben Affleck 2004 World Series Collection." The NY Times interviewed Edwards earlier this week and the Boston Herald reports that there are bidders for one of the death masks. It's unclear is the death masks will travel to Boston. more ›
