Last Night's Action: One Point In Canada

Last Night's Action: One Point In Canada

Unfortunately for New York, Ryan Hollweg took a stupid boarding penalty and his five-minute major penalty combined with Martin Staraka’s holding penalty resulted in a 5-on-3 advantage for the Oilers. Edmonton converted and their second power-play goal of the game looked like it would hold up. But, Sean Avery drew a big penalty late in the third and with the goaltender pulled, the Rangers converted with six second left in the game, thanks to Chris Drury and after overtime, things headed to a shootout. more ›

Last Night's Action: Keeping Things in Perspective

Last Night's Action: Keeping Things in Perspective

76ers 101, Knicks 90: Under most circumstances, losing to one of the worst teams in the NBA would be of concern to the Knicks. But with the death of guard Stephon Marbury's father, it doesn't seem so bad. Marbury played for the first half and scored two points but didn't come back out for the second half. Jamal Crawford had his second straight excellent game, but the Knicks frontcourt couldn't contain Samuel Delambert. The two... more ›

Last Night's Action: A Garden Shootout

Rangers 2, Devils 1 (SO): Petr Prucha did enough to finally earn a second "E" for his name. He set up the only goal in regulation and scored the only goal in the shootout. Scott Gomez struck against his former club. The Rangers had other chances, including Chris Drury's breakaway in overtime, so this win helped them sleep better at night. Islands 3, Penguins 2: This could have been a Pyhrric victory. Rick DiPietro got... more ›

Last Night's Action: Waking Up Too Late?

Last Night's Action: Waking Up Too Late?

  • Sabres 4, Devils 3: Could this be a preview of the Eastern Conference finals? Rarely do seeds hold up in the NHL playoffs, but if they do, the Sabres will have given their confidence a boost after struggling against the Devils in the past. Martin Brodeur is still three wins shy of the single-season record for victories. Brodeur's ability to play more games than most regular goalies have helped him remain in contention for that mark, but have his skills, which haven't eroded in a man who will turn 35 in May.

Last Night's Action: Saving Face on the Road

Last Night's Action: Saving Face on the Road

For the Nets to advance to the playoffs, they're going to need to put together a run, and they'll have to avoid the losing streaks like the five-game version Monday's win snapped. They are only a half-game out of a playoff berth, and given the sorry state of the Eastern Conference, the playoffs are looking like a be-in-it-to-win-it deal. The Nets are facing down a lost season, but all is not lost yet. more ›

Last Night's Action: Nets Waste Jefferson's Return

  • Georgetown 84, Notre Dame 82; Pittsburgh 65, Louisville 59: John Thompson III's team showed poise down the stretch and won despite seeing star center Roy Hibbert foul out with only six points. Jeff Green dropped 30 for the Hoyas, who reached their first Big East final since 1996. They'll meet Pittsburgh, who denied Long Island product Rick Pitino -- he went to St. Dominic's High School in Oyster Bay -- the chance to coach Louisville in the final. The Panthers won despite little from Aaron Gray. The finalists both have talented big men, but both can win without top-notch efforts in the paint.

  • Devils 3, Capitals 2: Yes, the Devils do have a backup goalkeeper. He even plays sometimes. His name? Scott Clemmensen. Martin Brodeur was in net for the first 38 Devils wins this season, but Clemmensen made 26 saves to pick up his first win this season Sunday. How good have the Devils been? They haven't lost consecutive games since December and are comfortably the second seed in the Eastern Conference.

Last Night's Action: Nets Bag a Must-Needed Win

  • Panthers 4, Devils 2: Ed Belfour won the battle between the two winningest goaltenders in the NHL. Martin Brodeur called Belfour's effort "decent," but he meant it in the nicest way possible.

Last Night's Action: Nets Wake Up Just In Time

Last Night's Action: Nets Wake Up Just In Time

  • Knicks 111, Sonics 93: Eddy Curry carried the load again by scoring 27 points in 30 minutes. and Stephon Marbury decided to contribute a team-high 28. The team finished its trip through the West at 2-3, but that feels a lot better when the last two games were the wins. The Post and The Times have both recently addressed why David Lee hasn't been starting over Jared Jeffries. With Friday's win, New York is now 9-15 when he comes off the bench and 8-8 when he starts. If Coach Isiah Thomas wants to use him for 35 minutes off the bench every night, that might work. But if Lee loses minutes to Jeffries, it will be a severe disappointment. Lee and Curry are the two bright spots on the team this season.
