At Least 91 Dead After Coordinated Attacks In Norway, Suspect In Custody

At least 91 people were killed yesterday in Norway after two coordinated attacks rocked the country—and police have now arrested and charged a self-identified right wing Christian fundamentalist with spearheading the deadly attacks. Anders Behring Breivik, 32, is accused of dressing up as a police officer, entering the youth camp on the island of Utoya, and then shooting at least 84 people, most of whom were teens between 14 and 18. “People were falling dead right in front of me. I ran through the campus to the tent area. I saw the gunman — two people started to talk to him and two seconds later they were both shot,” witness Adrian Pracon told the BBC. more ›

Fireball Video: If The Times Square Bomb Worked

Fireball Video: If The Times Square Bomb Worked

Prosecutors told the judge in the trial of Faisal Shahzad, the man who tried and failed to blow up Times Square last May, that Shahzad deserves life in jail. They argued in court papers that Shahzad, who already pleaded guilty to charges, sought to "exact revenge on the same country where he had lived for nearly a decade and in which he had applied to become a citizen." To buffer their recommendation to the judge, who will sentence Shahzad next Tuesday, they revealed more details about his plans, as well as a Joint Terrorism Task Force bomb test video (you can see it above) to show what the devastation would have looked like. more ›

Starbucks Bomber Pleads Guilty

Starbucks Bomber Pleads Guilty

When Kyle Shaw was 17, he really loved the movie Fight Club and he also set off a crude improvised explosive device outside an Upper East Side Starbucks. Now he's 19 and he's pleaded guilty to the incident in a plea deal with the Manhattan DA's office. The Daily News reports he'll go "to prison for 3-1/2 years. He faced a minimum of 15 years and a max of 25 years if convicted of a top arson count by a jury. Assistant District Attorney Christopher Ryan said his office took Shaw's age into account when offering the shorter prison term. Defense lawyer Adam Perlmutter noted that his client, who graduated from high school around the time of the incident, has no criminal history." more ›

Getting What You Pay For: Times Square Bomb Crappy On Purpose

Who didn't breathe a sigh of relief when the FBI deduced a proper version of the failed Times Square car bomb would have killed thousands, and nervously joke that it was a good thing Pakistani U.S. citizen Faisal Shahzad didn't listen carefully in al Qaeda Bomb-making 101? But now it turns out that the cheap homemade explosive, left smoking in the back of an SUV in May, was purposely weak, the NY Times reports. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, speaking at Washington's Center for National Policy, said Shahzad was afraid that purchasing more potent goods would be noticed by U.S. authorities. more ›

Guess What: Times Square Bomb Would Have Been Very Deadly

A secret FBI test of how deadly the bomb that Faisal Shahzad planted in Times Square is no longer a secret, as the Post reports that a team created a "correctly made" version and found it "would have killed thousands of people." Luckily Shahzad was not a very good study at al Qaeda camp and his bomb failed to ignite properly and only started a fire, allowing street vendors to alert the authorities. more ›

Nigerian Terror Suspect's Explosive Underwear, Obama's Reassurances To American Public

ABC News showed photographs of the underwear worn by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab while he allegedly tried to destroy a Northwest Airlines flight landing in Detroit last week. ABC News explains, "The first photo... shows the slightly charred underpants with the bomb packet still in place... The bomb packet is a six-inch long container of the high-explosive chemical PETN, less than a half cup in volume, weighing about 80 grams. A government test with 50 grams of PETN blew a hole in the side of an airliner. That was the amount in the bomb carried by the so-called shoe bomber Richard Reid over Christmas 2001. The underpants bomb would have been one and a half times as powerful." more ›

UES Starbucks Blast Seems Unrelated to Consulate Bombings

UES Starbucks Blast Seems Unrelated to Consulate Bombings

The Post reports that investigators doubt Monday's explosion outside an Upper East Side Starbucks is related to the bombings outside the British and Mexican Consulates as well as the Times Square recruiting station. Apparently the "make-up of the bomb -- flash powder stuffed inside a jumbo pill jar -- was not similar to the ones used for the earlier bombings," and the description of the teens seen fleeing the area doesn't match the others bombings' lone bicyclist. The Post adds police are investigating whether the incident is linked to a small explosion at a Starbucks in Providence, RI, but the Seattle coffee company sent us a statement, "We are confident that these two explosions were not linked. Further, though the investigation continues, we actually have no reason to believe that Starbucks specifically was a target for this incident." (Apparently there had been a series of small explosions in plastic bottles in different parts of Providence last year.) more ›
