Last night the final preview performance of the Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie was halted for about 20 minutes when the electronically controlled set failed to clear during a scene change. The curtain fell, and star John Stamos came out to the footlights to stall for time. Fortunately for him, inimitable cut-up Don Rickles was in the audience cracking wise. "I'm too old for this," Rickles shouted from the orchestra section. And as the delay dragged on, Mister Warmth grew increasingly impatient, yelling, "I came here for a night, not a weekend!" Rickles also told that hippie Stamos to get a haircut.

Last week everyone from writers on the picket line to bored couch potatoes were abuzz with news that the late night heavyweights would be returning with all new shows. Last night was the big night (Letterman, O'Brien, Kimmel, Ferguson and Leno all returned), and both Conan O'Brien and David Letterman took the stage showing solidarity with strike beards intact. Letterman threatened to shave his later on Conan's show, saying that he'd probably be helping his New York late night pal out since he's returned sans writers.

Should Bob Saget, John Stamos or … that other guy... decide to keep it real by riding the New York City subway, they’ll likely find themselves wondering whatever happened to predictability. That’s right; consider yourselves on notice Danny Tanner, Joey and Uncle Jesse. The Olsen twins are one thing, but our subways are full enough without you and your irreverent hi-jinks, thank you very much. Though we might consider an exception for Stamos if...

Bob Saget, Matt Stone and Arianna Huffington walk into a room...it sounds like the beginning of a joke. Oh but it's not. It's only part of the panel set up for tomorrow nights discussion at the 92nd St Y entitled "Punch Lines and Politics: A Seconding the First Forum".
