Met fans had to be disappointed with their team's 5-3 loss to the Phillies Thursday afternoon, but they likely got a kick of out WFAN personalities Chris Russo and Mike Francesa in their role as commenators. The hosts of Mike and the Mad Dog won't make Gothamist forget Bob Murphy, but they didn't disgrace themselves either. Russo did seven innings of play by play, and he brought his usual energy and trademark cackling laugh to the booth. He developed some catchphrases (each inning ended with "and that's that") and pointed out the absurdity of the contest which awarded a listener if the Mets turned a triple play in a particular inning. Francesa's play by play did not match Russo's, but they worked well together and gave basic and tolerable color commentary.

The good news for Mets fans is that the Mets finally returned to TV on Time Warner. Whether or not you want to watch the Mets is another issue. Time Warner and Cablevision settled their pissing match, which restored the MSG Network, Fox Sports Net, and a few other channels to Time Warner's 2.4 million cable subscribers in the area. The dispute over rights fees resulted in the channels being pulled on August 1st, affecting coverage of the slumping Mets, who are cover your eyes ugly anyway.

Looks like it's just that kind of season for the Mets. Jose Reyes gets injured in spring training, Matsui comes in and stinks it up at short, the Mets make trades at the deadline only to fall several games back, and now Glavine gets injured while not even playing. Glavine lost his two upper front teeth and received stitches to his lower lip. He is scheduled to miss his start on Wednesday due to the injury.

At least the Mets can say they were swept by the best team in baseball over the weekend. In yesterday's 6-2 loss (box score), there was little that went the right way of the Metropolitans. Kazuo Matsui experienced back spasms that might send him to the DL, David Wright played poorly in the field, and Vance Wilson left the game after being hit in the head with a bat. But wait, there's more. The Mets are now a whopping 11 games out of first and they can say they are in a race for last place in the NL East. After all, they are only 8 games in front of the last place Expos.

- Kevin Brown returns to form for the Yankees.

- And the voice of the Mets, Bob Murphy dies, and Isiah Thomas continues to shore up the Knicks on Gothamist Sports

Yesterday, Bob Murphy, the longtime voice of the Mets passed away at the age of 79. Murphy was with the Mets since their inaugural season in 1962, missing only two years while he was in Baltimore, and retired last year after more than 6000 games with the organization.
