Special effects are everywhere on TV these days, though with some exceptions (*cough* Ringer pilot *cough*) you barely notice it. So its nice sometimes to see how it all comes together. To wit: the folks at Brainstorm Digital have gone and made a video showing how they broke down some of the special effects in the second season of Boardwalk Empire. Very cool:

Video: Riding The Boardwalk Empire Vintage Subway
You've heard all about the Boardwalk Empire-themed vintage 1920's trains running on the express 2/3 track in Manhattan—and yesterday it launched! But have you gotten to ride it yet? Below, you can watch two videos and get an idea of what it looks like inside.
Reminder: Boardwalk Empire Vintage Subways Start Running Today (9/3)
For you subway enthusiasts, as well as those who take the 2 and 3 lines, a gentle reminder: The MTA is running a 1920’s train on the express 2/3 track in Manhattan—starting today—every Saturday and Sunday this September, between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. between 42nd and 96th Streets. It's all part of HBO's promotion of its drama, Boardwalk Empire, which is set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City.
Boardwalk Empire Is Bringing Back Old School Subways
Boardwalk Empire returns to the airwaves on September 25th, and they're ringing in season 2 with an ad buy. But it's an interesting one! They'll be bringing back vintage trains to the subway tracks. We're told:
Three Reasons We're Looking Forward To Sitting In Front Of The TV This Fall
Soon we'll be out of the summer television slump (ahem, True Blood) and into the fruitful fall, which brings Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, and Bored To Death, amongst others. But let's focus on those three, which all have season trailers out now.
Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire Lead In Emmy Nominations
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences this morning announced the nominees for the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards (here's the official PDF). And while many of the names on the list are familiar, there were some interesting switches. Notably HBO's two new dramas, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones, were both nominated for Best Drama against Mad Men, Dexter, Friday Night Lights and The Good Wife.
Zipcar's New Vintage Fleet Arrives! (Or Boardwalk Empire Is Filming)
While filming around New York City might get in your way at times, it is pretty cool when you are tossed back in time after stumbling onto a set. This afternoon reader Louis Caldarola happened upon these vintage cars parked at McGolrick Park and Driggs in Brooklyn, where the show Boardwalk Empire will be filming tonight (according to Steve Buscemi's stalker). Either that or Zipcar is going super retro in the neighborhood.
Photos: Boardwalk Empire Brings Back Old New York
The Boardwalk Empire cast has left their Greenpoint boardwalk and has taken to the streets of Brooklyn. Last week they took over the old Gage & Tollner space, yesterday they filmed at the Commandant's House, and today they've got some amazing vintage cars taking up valuable parking spots on the Brooklyn streets (according to OnLocationVacations, they're at Clermont and Dekalb avenues).
Boardwalk Empire Brings Gage & Tollner Back To Life Today
The landmarked building that formerly housed Brooklyn's Gage & Tollner gets to travel back in time today. It was one of the longest running restaurants in New York, with its location at 372 Fulton Street keeping its doors open from 1892 to 2004 (it opened at 303 Fulton Street in 1879). The space has been empty since the controversial Arby's fast food joint moved out (less than half a year after moving in); before that the space housed a TGIFriday's. But things are about to change, at least temporarily... according to this location schedule, Boardwalk Empire will be filming there today.
Racy Atlantic City Badonkadonk Scandalizes A Nation Few
In this day and age of Vodka owners who put bikini-butt ads featuring their own daughter's derriere on the back of a fleet of NYC buses, is anyone really that scandalized by a semi-naked caboose anymore? A few vocal commuters are upset over the Resorts Casino Hotel's billboard advertising their show "Moonshine Follies," and want it to be removed from eyesight. The ad, which features a finely-photoshopped rear end covered by nothing but a few strings of beads, can be found on the Atlantic City Expressway, over a NJ Transit train station. And Casino owner Dennis Gomes doesn't get the big fuss: "I've got five kids and they've seen butts all their lives and they all turned out fine," he said.
Is Sad Panda Ready For His Close Up?
Boardwalk Empire is currently off-air filming its 2nd season, and today they're departing their Atlantic City-in-Greenpoint boardwalk, and filming around Bowling Green and State/Broadway in Manhattan. Who cares, right? Well we care, because that is Sad Panda territory! Here's the deal, someone needs to sneak him into a scene so when next season airs we can see Sad Panda the time traveler walking around behind Nucky Thompson or whoever. Not up for a caper involving a middle-aged man dressed in a panda outfit, Steve Buscemi, and Hollywood bigwigs? Fine, at least try to get a photo of him on the set.
Boardwalk Empire Brings Money, Glamour to the City
If the mid-century Mad Men aren't for you, perhaps you've been tuning in to HBO on Sunday nights for Boardwalk Empire, the show set in Atlantic City during the Prohibition Era. While New Jersey may be the backdrop, there's plenty of New York City to be seen—and not just in the New York gangsters portrayed on the show. First of all, they've been shooting all over the city, and the 1920s boardwalk was actually built in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Check out this timelapse below:
