The (Noiseless) Ice Cream Man is Coming

As the weather warms and plenty of New Yorkers are driven to the brink of insanity by the incessant, nursery school-worthy jingles blaring from slow-going ice cream trucks, take solace in the news that several new ice cream carts—all w/o loudspeakers—will debut this weekend. These quiet heroes are our greatest hope for winning the jingle wars, and when all is scooped and done, the weasel will be popped once and for all and the turkey in the straw will stay that way— FOREVER.

Small batch chocolate company Nunu has opened a flagship store on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. As reported last week by the blog Sweet Freak, CEO and CCO (Chief Chocolate Officer) Justine Pringle decided to create a central location to sell her truffles, caramels, chews, crushes, and barks. In time, she said on Tuesday, Pringle hopes to use the long, weathered table that occupies the center of the store for special events like chocolate tastings. She and her husband bought the table at the Brooklyn Flea, where they are vendors on the weekends. Nunu Chocolate also took part in last year’s Unfancy Food Show and is incorporated into Blue Marble Ice Cream for special flavors.

When Jennie Dundas and Alexis Miesen, founders of Blue Marble Ice Cream, discovered the lack of ice cream in Brooklyn, their shop was born. Just one year later they are now expanding their two organic, grass-fed ice cream parlors in the borough, and adding a third in Rwanda, naturally. With the launch of their non-profit organization Blue Marble Dreams, they'll "explore the transformative potential of ice cream not just as a source of fun and joy but also as a means of sustainable economic growth in developing countries with local but underutilized dairy resources." Not only that, but they'll be doing so with eco-conscious business models. This week the two ice cream queens told us a little bit about their business, some new flavors on the way, and their plan to set up shop in Rwanda.

Kafana: Serbia has landed in Alphabet City, over on Avenue C. Owner Vladimir Ocokoljic tells NY Mag that what sets his new place (pictured) apart can be summed up in one word: “Pork.” Thrillist has the menu, and Ocokoljic isn’t playing: pork dominates, from the Meat Meze appetizer of assorted pork rinds to the pan fried schnitzel entrée rolled with ham and creamy spread. There are salads for the swine-averse, as well as some concessions made to lamb and beef lovers. Ocokoljic also shows restraint with the desserts – items like Zito (wheat sugar nuts) are 100% pork free. 116 Avenue C, (212) 353-8000.
