Two years ago today the lights went out all over New York and what really impressed Gothamist was that, in one of those great moments of urban solidarity, nothing bad really happened (unlike, say, the blackout of '77). What's important to remember though, besides how well everyone did last time, is how easily another blackout could happen today. Especially after yesterday's record breaking heat, 99° in Central Park!

Another NY Times article cites some areas of Canada are encouraging energy conservation. One measure is to wear skimpier clothing. Sounds like some good ideas are coming out of Canada!

Gothamist would like to thank the New York Times for giving us a mini anxiety attack with an article about last year's blackout that begins, "." Augh! Are state officials trying to tell us that perhaps another blackout could occur, because if that's the case, trim those tree branches! NYC has enough power until 2009, which is when officials expect the city to fall short of the 3000 megawatts needed by 280 megawatts (if anyone can explain any of this, be our guest). Yes, the blackout was a great way to bond, dance in the streets and have cookouts, but blackouts are so 2003. Let's think of something new in this post-Industrial Revolution world, like money magically coming out of all ATMs at once.

You can tell a lot about a year by seeing which posts were popular, and from Gothamist's standpoint, it's been a banner year for our readers who are perverts or nerds (we're hoping the loyal readers are both). Here are a few of our most popular posts: Thoughts on the Matrix Reloaded; 100 Best Songs; when we pretended to know all about friendster messages; Paris Hilton sex tapes and her SNL appearance; Nicole Richie's racial identity; What not to do when you blog; Jelly Kelly; Best Movie Sex Scenes; Michael Jackson's mugshot; Nudist camps for teenagers; Blackout Edition; Lever House Restaurant; Metrosexuals; Hating Lauren Weisberger (related, Weisberger on her boss Anna Wintour ), Jayson Blair, Blair Hornstine; Larry Wachowski's possible sex change; anything on teenaged stars, speficially Hilary Duff (related, her nutty fans); the New York City Blackout Edition; and our Events page, brought to life by editor Mindy and intern Willa.

As part of the Mayor's investigation into the Blackout of 2003, there is an online survey that Mayor is encouraging everyone to fill out. There is some question to how respresentative the results will be, but all agree that the sentiment is right. Results will be released after the survey closes this Thurday, September 18th.

Even though it's just been a few days since the blackout, Gothamist has noticed that the favorite topic is "Where were you during the blackout?" It has sort of replaced "Where were you on September 11?" as a way to bond over a common event, and works well because it's less fraught than bringing up September 11, but still gives a chance to discuss September 11, and tends to have more comic potential ("Well, after walking down 23 flights in heels and getting wasted at a cafe, some guy came by with his Segway and let us have rides!" or "Sleeping on Grand Central's steps - not so fun.") .

The New York City Blackout Edition
The city's true grit showed during its literally darkest hours and Gothamist has the evidence.
