Urban Outfitters Blames T-Shirt Designer For Ripping Off Four Loko

Urban Outfitters Blames T-Shirt Designer For Ripping Off Four Loko

Last weekend, a reader alleged that Urban Outfitters (UO) ripped off his Black Flag-inspired Four Loko T-shirt design that he had printed and sold online last fall. But a senior PR manager at the UO home office in Philadelphia told us that UO did not design, provide inspiration for, or manufacture the T-shirt in question, and further explained to us how UO handles situations where one of their vendors are called into question: "We are very explicit with all vendors that our brand supports artists and their creativity and we will not tolerate anyone that copies or steals ideas." more ›

Did Urban Outfitters Rip Off Black Flag-Inspired Four Loko Shirt?

Over the last two years, Skull Bank purveyor Urban Outfitters has been accused by several jewelry designers of ripping off their designs. The company defended themselves—it can't feel too good to be scolded by Miley Cyrus, after all—but now, a reader is alleging that the company ripped off his Black Flag-inspired Four Loko t-shirt! more ›

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the release of music journalist Michael Azerrad's history of indie rock, Our Band Could Be Your Life, indie musicians of all persuasions gathered at the Bowery Ballroom last night to perform the material of the 13 bands featured in the book. More than just a bunch of de facto cover tunes, the concert was an opportunity for a reinterpretation of enduringly influential music by contemporary ears. more ›

Weekly Food News: Early Edition

Weekly Food News: Early Edition

Today the Times’s Frank Bruni marvels at Manhattan’s new wave of high tone restaurant openings during a recession, and pins the trend not on entrepreneurial bravado but on the fact that it takes years to get a fancy eatery open, and most of these new places were envisioned in flusher economic times. It is true that in 2005, the top fifth of earners in Manhattan made 52 times what the lowest fifth make – $365,826 compared with $7,047 – comparable to the income disparity in Namibia. Yet thanks to tax cuts and stagflation, the income gap has only widened in the past three years. Dinner at Per Se is as unattainable as ever for New York’s lower orders, but even with Wall Street turbulence it’s unlikely the ranks of the well-heeled will thin to the point where a fashionable restaurant can’t manage. Of course, chefs like Ken Friedman (The Spotted Pig) are artists and don’t chain their muse to the vagaries of the economy: “I’m certainly not the kind who would look at the Dow. Does a writer write or not write a book based on the economic climate? Does a songwriter write songs that way?” more ›

Gothamist's Week in Rock: New Year's Hangover Edition

Gothamist's Week in Rock: New Year's Hangover Edition

The Time Warner on-screen guide simply said "Tila Tequila" on MTV when the clock struck midnight last Monday, leading a casual observer to assume they were blowing through a marathon of her depressing reality show. But oh no! The oddly shaped, elfish face of the network apparently gets sole, top billing over the biggest night of the year as the host of MTV's annual New Years Eve party. She was mostly responsible for stumbling through some lines on her way to introducing the lineup of bands on tap, including the likes of Good Charlotte, Kid Rock and a somehow still relevant Wyclef. While those in attendance seemed to be having a fine time, it may pain music fans to see the network has no sign of changing their tune in the new year, rolling out the same rehashed schlock they've been shoveling for most of the decade. Cobra Starship summed it up best in their post-balldrop interview: "A lot of bands are trying to be credible...we wanna be in-credible in '08!" No word yet what role Gabe Saporta will play in "Shot of Love, Season 2." (pic via MTV) more ›

Dave Longstreth, Dirty Projectors

Dave Longstreth, Dirty Projectors

Dave Longstreth has been recording music under the name Dirty Projectors since 2003, and currently tours with a band made up of three others. Amber Coffman, Angel Deradoorian and Brian Mcomber help him put on one of the more amazing live shows this city has to offer -- just check out this Take Away Show (and this one) filmed around New York earlier this year. Their sound is bi-polar...anxious and somber, muddled and crisp, a weathered familiarness mixed with a new sonic punch. Tomorrow night they play at Mercury Lounge before heading out on a tour that will take them on the road through the season. more ›
