Last year Brooklyn band Bishop Allen released twelve EPs, one for each month. This year they're delivering twelve songs which make up their label-debut full length album, The Broken String (out July 24th). The Harvard grads who formed the band, Justin Rice and Christian Rudder, also wear their acting hats from time to time. Perhaps fittingly their band has had a rotating cast of members, and currently includes drummer Cully Symington and vocalist/percussionist Darbie Nowatka......

THEATER: Less than a week post-Fringe, another festival is upon us: the Brick's new Clown Theater Festival, which starts tonight with a subway parade and "free-for-all pie-fight." Some of the participating local and international performers wear big red noses but these aren't the sort of clowns that kids get scared of at birthday parties, but rather the promoters of and participants in a vibrant physical format that's re-energizing theater; there are performances like Chiche Capon's......

Frog Eyes and Sunset Rubdown (despite having border problems) will be taking over Mercury Lounge two nights this week. Sunset Rubdown is Wolf Parade keyboardist Spencer Krug's side project, and he produced a beautiful album this year entitled, Shut Up I Am Dreaming. It got an 8.6 on Pitchfork, just a few points below last years Wolf Parade rating. Anyway, point is...it's good. If you go to the show tonight you can catch Beirut as......

Tonight San Francisco rockers with the middle class rasp, Two Gallants, come to Bowery Ballroom. We interviewed them last week, and you should really check them out while they're in town. For serious. Opening up for them are Sam Champion (the actual NY weatherman still comes up first in a Google search) and Cold War Kids. Elsewhere in the city, Pela is playing with Project Jenny/Project Jan (at the Delancey). There's already ex-Art Bruter's and......

Bishop Allen is: Jack Delamitraux (drums) Christian Owens (bass) Justin Rice (guitar, vocals) Christian Rudder (guitar) In 2003, these 4 released one of the most popular and critically acclaimed local indie records with Charm School. Before we ever clapped our hands and said yeah, Bishop Allen were selling thousands of records on their own with no label or official support aside from the word of mouth of fans. They've got a distinct New York......

Thank god the holidays are finally over and bands are getting back into the swing of things. Now we can sell off all our unwanted gifts on eBay (how much do you think we can get for a hypercolor "hip" bible?) and spend the cash on evil rock and roll, which is back with a vengeance in our fine, fine city. Why are secret shows never really a secret? The Mooney Suzuki play in semi-secrecy......

Tonight at 7pm / $10 Air America's The Majority Report with Janeane Garofalo and Sam Seder will broadcast live from The Tank, which it also did during the Republican National Convention. This time the broadcast includes a live studio audience and......

Don’t let the title trick you. Gothamist learned that this critically-acclaimed indie is more funny “sad” than funny “ha ha.” While most films fail to capture the feel of a generation, Andrew Bujalski’s low-budget debut (featuring Brooklyn's Bishop Allen),is to be commended for its raw, sharp portrayal of confused, aimless, 20-somethings struggling through quasi-adulthood (twixters?). While shot on an inexpensive camera, with poor sound equipment, and lacking a thorough soundtrack, Funny Ha Ha draws in......

First and foremost I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I offended the commenter in yesterday's post. I can't make any guarantees one way or another, but what do you think? Should this post be daily or weekly? Feel free to use the comment section. That said. here's what's happening Wednesday through Sunday. Last night I watched Stars headline the Darfur benefit show at Northsix in Williamsburg. It goes without saying that Stars (who are from Montreal,......

The weekly author of this post has fled for Las Vegas leaving us only with a trail of mumbled words. Something about two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers...Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. That's actually just a......
