Happy Birthday, Charles Dickens! As you know by now, if you've Googled anything today, it's the author's birthday—he was born 200 years ago, across the pond in England. But he has plenty of New York ties. Dickens first came here in 1842, spending a month in the city giving lectures, as well as raising support for copyright laws. On Valentine's Day that year "a Boz Ball was held in his honor at the Park Theater, with 3,000 guests. Queens Woman Pleads Guilty To Killing Sister On Victim's Birthday
A Long Island City woman pleaded guilty to shooting and killing her sister the night of her sister's 27th birthday party. Melanie Webb, 25, admitted to fatally shooting her sister Tara Webb, as well as non-fatally shooting her sister's boyfriend Terrell Carmichael on March 26 in the Long Island City apartment they all shared. No motive was given for the shooting.

In celebration, the New York Public Library—where Pooh and his pals Eeyore, Tigger, Piglet and Kanga reside—invite you to give Pooh a card via their magical mailbox. They write: "we have a mailbox at the Children’s Center at 42nd Street and are accepting cards on Winnie’s behalf. After all, the original Winnie-the-Pooh doll set is at the Library, on view in the Children’s Center, in a special room surrounded by art of the 100 Acre Wood!" The legendary magician Harry Houdini would have been turning 137 today if he had found a way to achieve immortality, but you already knew that if you Googled anything this morning. Houdini was born in Budapest on March 24th, 1874 (though he often claimed he was born in Appleton, Wisconsin) and died in Detroit on Halloween of 1926. Much of his life, however, was spent in New York City.

Did you know that on March 1st, 1968 the New York State Legislature created the Metropolitan Transportation Authority? That's right, it's the MTA's birthday! All those years ago the agency was created to oversee transportation operations and to become New York City Transit's parent agency. Today the MTA as we know it is 43 years old, officially over the hill but yet so much more to learn. We're getting a little misty-eyed over here ourselves.

Happy Birthday, Crossword Puzzle!
That's correct, the first modern crossword puzzle was published on this very day, back in 1913, in the New York World newspaper (and it was the very one you see pictured above!). According to Inside the Apple, the paper was owned by Joseph Pulitzer at the time, who "raised its circulation through sensational news coverage, stunt reporting, and a focus on distractions and pastimes." Enter: the crossword! Or as it was called back then, the "word-cross." It was created by Arthur Wynne, and ran in the Sunday Fun section of the paper—where it became an instant hit... among most. Oddly enough, the New York Public Library and the New York Times both criticized the game.
