The 2012 baby derby seems to be won by a couple who delivered a 7-pound, 3-ounce, 18.5-inch baby girl at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx. The hospital says Rania Ali was born at the stroke of midnight. Also, she is VERY ADORABLE (see picture). But Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn says 5-pound, 8-ounce Emma Sieminska was also the first baby of the New Year (and Emma's pretty cute too)!

Lady Has Baby In Bushwick Art Gallery, On Purpose
Artist Marni Kotak turned Bushwick's Microscope Gallery into her own maternity ward earlier this month, inviting one and all to come see her during her ninth month of pregnancy, and eventually inviting a hand-selected group of strangers to be there on the big day... which was yesterday.
Mariah Carey Gives Birth To Twins, Names One After A Room
Congratulations to our favorite weirdly childish, candy-loving couple, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, on the birth of their twins over the weekend... and also for naming one of them after a room in their home. The girl has been bequeathed with Monroe, as in Marilyn, which is kind of cheesy but not really all that bad, especially once we learned that the boy is named Moroccan Scott, after the top-floor room in Mariah's New York penthouse that's decorated, shockingly, with a Moroccan theme (and fine, it's also where Nick proposed to her, with a ring hidden in a Pop Rocks wrapper).
Midtown Delivery: Brooklyn Woman Gives Birth In Livery Cab
A Brooklyn woman got the livery cab ride of her life on Wednesday when her baby decided not to wait for the hospital and instead appeared at 51st Street and Seventh Avenue. Even Sweeney called a cab from Arecibo at 6 p.m., and when she got in, "I was far enough in labor that I was like 'Please lock the doors,' because I knew I was going to be stomping on them." The next thing she, her partner Inez Murray and cabbie Juan Hernandez knew, her water broke. Hernandez said, "She started screaming. I told her, 'If it has to happen here, just push!'"
Baby Delivered At Bowling Green Station
Surprise delivery! Pregnant mom Kelly Xion was waiting for the Brooklyn-bound train at Bowling Green yesterday afternoon when her contractions began. EMTs Thomas Loggins and Jerry Chatelaim showed up fast, and said "the baby was already crowning" by the time they got there. Xion gave birth to a healthy son on the platform, with many commuters watching on! Xion and her son were quickly brought to New York Downtown Hospital. Perhaps she'll name him Bowling Green, taking after the parents of Number 16 Bus Shelter.
Brooklyn Moms Won't Give Birth in Brooklyn Hospitals
Sure, moms in the "brownstone belt" might pooh-pooh Manhattan life as too fast, too cramped and not having enough food co-ops, but when it comes time to have their babies they seem to be oddly drawn to the borough. According to New York Times stats, hospitals in neighborhoods like Park Slope, Fort Greene and Cobble Hill have lost patients, while four Manhattan hospitals' birth rates have gone up 31%. The total number of births in the city has gone up just 3% in the last ten years.
Baby Slows Down Rush Hour Traffic
A Brooklyn woman gave birth in the back of her livery cab in the Battery Tunnel yesterday morning, slowing down commuters and "freaking out" her cabbie. Park Sloper Maya Polton said her water broke at about 7:30 a.m., but she and her husband waited a little while before calling a cab to take her to a Manhattan hospital. By the time they got to the tunnel, baby Jacob Max Handelsman wasn't waiting any longer.
C Train Delayed Due To Woman Giving Birth!
At around 930 a.m. Ben Sisario of the NY Times took to Twitter to alert fellow Brooklyn straphangers, "Manhattan-bound C delayed at Nostrand because someone is having a baby! Per station agent." It's just so much less frustrating when delays are caused by the miracle of life. The MTA confirms, noting on their site, "Due to someone requiring medical assistance at the Nostrand Avenue Station, Manhattan-bound trains are running on the express track between the Broadway Junction Station and the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street Station. Expect delays." UPDATE: Word is the mom went into labor on the train but gave birth in a hospital.
Woman Gives Birth on F Train Platform
Stand clear of the breaking water, please. A husband and wife were riding the subway to Bellevue so she could give birth but never quite made it to the hospital, settling for delivery on the F train platform at East Broadway. Yep, a husband relied on the MTA to get his wife to the hospital, despite the fact that entire generations of New Yorkers have grown old and died while waiting for the F. But the real miracle here isn’t the successful delivery, but that passengers reportedly got off the train to help her!
J.Lo Gives Birth to Twins on Long Island, in Couture
Not too long ago it was reported that Jennifer Lopez was ready to burst as her belly swelled with twins on the way. She had visited a Long Island hospital with husband Marc Anthony and her couture hospital gowns, but it must have been a false alarm, because soon after she was attending Fashion Week events. Initially it was reported she would have a Cesarean birth that was scheduled for Valentine's Day; no word yet on whether she ended up going the natural way, as yesterday the twins finally arrived.
