Channel 7 Won't Changes Its Mind and Will Air Reading of 9/11 Victim Names

Perhaps it's another sign of people moving on from 9/11, or perhaps it's something else, but WABC/Channel 7 has decided not to air the reading of 9/11 victims' names on Tuesday, the 6th anniversary of the attack. Instead, it will continue with its regular programming following the moment of silence at around 9 a.m. If the decision isn't changed, the top-rated station will become the city's first not to air the reading of the 2,749 names. Kenny Plotnik, the station's news director told the Daily News, "We decided to provide continuous coverage on our digital channel and Web site so our audience could have a choice between their regular programming and the Sept. 11 ceremony. We hope to be respectful to the families and serve our audience. This is not about ratings, it's about what's right." more ›

Last Thursday, all of the stations covered the tragic fire in the Bronx quite well and took the opportunity for some refreshers on basic fire safety. As expected, WCBS went way overboard creating a whole special set of graphics for the station’s coverage, complete with new lower thirds that used a different font which were ready by Thursday’s 5 p.m. newscast. For 6 p.m., CBS 2 needlessly sent anchor Jim Rosenfeld to the scene, as they tend to do with most big stories. more ›

    Bill Beutel's Legacy

    Bill Beutel's Legacy

Today, there are more obituaries about and tributes to former WABC anchor Bill Beutel, who died yesterday. The NY Times' obituary calls him the "dapper and unruffled anchor"; it also states that he died of a progressive neuological disorder. am New York notes that it was Beutel and Eyewitness News co-anchor Roger Grimsby's "mix of 'happy talk' and hard-charging reporting -- would influence television stations across the nation" and recalls what current WABC anchor Bill Ritter said when he took over the anchor slot in 2004, "How do you replace a legend? You don't, you succeed him." He was considered a "father figure" to many reporters, and among the things we didnt realize, Beutel's last named was "pronounced Bill Boydel" but a news director made him change it to "Beutel." more ›
