Rangers And Islanders Deal At The Deadline

Rangers And Islanders Deal At The Deadline

Normally, seventh-place teams don’t make trades like this, but the Rangers are not a normal team. Constricted by the salary cap and in many ways built to win now, New York sent Petr Prucha, Nigel Dawes and Dmitri Kalinin to Phoenix in exchange for Derek Morris and draft picks to Toronto in exchange for Nik Antropov. Morris improves the defense and Antropov really improves the offense. Giving up on Dawes and Prucha is tough, but with their cap situation the Rangers probably would not have been able to resign them next year anyway. The Islanders traded their captain, Bill Guerin, to Pittsburgh in exchange for a conditional draft pick. It is initially a fifth-rounder, but could go as high as a third-rounder if the Penguins win a playoff round. more ›

Last Night's Action: A Slippery Slope

  • Bruins 2, Islanders 1: Not even 41 shots were good enough to take down the NHL's best team. Bill Guerin got a goal, but that came with 53.2 seconds left. more ›

Last Night's Action: Glad They Could Help

  • Penguins 1, Devils 0: The Devils need to do a better job of taking advantage of opportunities. They outshot the Pens, 37-19, but still got shut out by Marc-Andre Fleury.

Last Night's Action: Still Not Content

  • Flyers 3, Islanders 2: At least they got a point. The Islanders have now lost five straight and six of seven. Bill Guerin's goal -- a one-timer from inside the blue line -- was legit. But Andy Hilbert's was an early Christmas present. It deflected off the arm of Flyers defenseman Ossi Vaananen.

Last Night's Action: Devils Can't Finish

Last Night's Action: Devils Can't Finish

Give credit to Montreal goalie Carey Price. Martin Brodeur has now started 28 straight games. He may be indomitable, but he wasn't impregnable Tuesday. The Devils now trail Montreal by one point in the Eastern Conference standings.

  • Lightning 8, Islanders 4: The smoke from the fire that has been the Islanders has all but dissipated. This latest disaster -- the fifth in six games -- saw the Islanders allow eight goals to the worst team in the conference. Bill Guerin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Ben Walter and Mike Comrie scored for New York.

Last Night's Action: A Big Win For The Islanders

    • Islanders 4 Rangers 3 (Shootout): This was not a game for fans of goaltenders. Henrik Lundqvist was terrible, Wade Dubielewicz was too but better when it counted and the Islanders prevailed in a sloppy game. more ›

    Last Night's Action: There's a Reason He's a Backup

But Dubielewicz doesn't deserve all the blame. Ottawa has plenty of talent and the highest points total in the Eastern Conference. After stonewalling to a scoreless first period, the Senators put up three goals in the middle session to suck the drama out of this one. Bill Guerin scored both Islanders goals, with the second coming in garbage time. more ›

Last Night's Action: A Pair Of Wins

Things got testy at the end of the game as Shane Doan took a swipe at the puck after Rick DiPietro had saved it and a scrum erupted behind the net. Doan took the worst of it penalty wise as he received a game misconduct. more ›

Last Night's Action: Addition By Subtraction?

Last Night's Action: Addition By Subtraction?

Knicks 100, Nets 93: No Stephon Marbury, and the Knicks take down the Nets. Of course, the Nets didn't have Jason Kidd (headache), so who knows which team was worse off. Richard Jefferson's heroics couldn't get the job done for the Nets, who continue to play inexplicably poorly at home following road games. Jamal Crawford filled the backcourt "void" for the Knicks with 29 points, and Zach Randolph had 25. Richard Jefferson had 31 points... more ›

Last Night's Action: Nets Hit a Wall

Last Night's Action: Nets Hit a Wall

Celtics 112, Nets 101: Early indications have the road to the NBA Finals going through Boston. If the Nets entertain any hopes of becoming a legit contender, they'll have to find a better measuring stick. As if the Nets didn't have enough concerns about Vince Carter, their star left the game in the third quarter with an ankle injury. At least he had 17 points when he left. Beating up on the Eastern Conference may... more ›

Last Night's Action: The Rangers Are In Last

Last Night's Action: The Rangers Are In Last

Saturday the Rangers couldn’t score again, despite 26 shots. Manny Fernandez played very well for the Bruins and when things went to a shootout, Shanahan, Drury and Jagr all failed to convert, but Phil Kessel didn’t. His wrist shot won the game and New York heads to Pittsburgh with a lot of questions, including one about the health of Martin Straka. more ›

Last Night's Action: Guerin Gets Going

  • Red Bulls 1, Galaxy 1: With their playoff matchup -- against New England of course -- already assured -- the Red Bulls found themselves in the unlikely role of postseason-bound spoiler. They did just that, denying the Galaxy the full number of points by drawing the game in Carson, Calif.

You may not have noticed that the NHL season started last weekend. While two games between two California teams in London may not have captured your interest, the three local teams that begin play tomorrow and the next few nights will all be fascinating stories throughout the season. more ›
