Police have identified the victim of Saturday's fatal bike accident on Atlantic Avenue as Jasmine Herron, a young barista at Think Coffee on Mercer Street. Co-workers say she was an avid cyclist, and always wore a helmet. Her neighbor said, "She was a nice girl. It's a tragedy."

A 23-year-old woman biking along Atlantic Avenue towards Washington Avenue was fatally struck by a bus after hitting the open door of a parked car. The driver of a parked car reportedly threw open her door without looking, sending the biker careening into the path of a B45 bus around 8:30 p.m. last night.

Biker Killed by a School Bus in LES, Two Other Women Run Down
Three women were hit and killed by cars today in isolated incidents in Manhattan and Brooklyn. A female cyclist was struck by a school bus near the corner of Delancey and Ludlow streets in the Lower East Side at around 4 pm, according to the Post. The tabloid reports that the bus was empty, while ABC notes that the vehicle belonged to the bus company Atlantic Express and was carrying two children at the time.

The NY Times' City section has a sprawling feature about biking in the city by writer Robert Sullivan. Sullivan (who wrote the wonderful about the rodent's history in NYC) noticed how his bike rides these days are much more pleasant—compared to 1987 when it included "navigating honks and taunts, the mayhem that was then on Cathedral Parkway"—thanks to more recent bicycle-friendly measures and, overall, more bicyclists on the road.
