After two pedestrians were seriously injured while crossing the West Drive in Prospect Park, the Park and the DOT have gone and tried to make things safer by putting up a bunch of orange barrels and trying to start a conversation about safety. And hey, here's a good conversation starter: comparing cyclists to dogs! "We have an off-leash time in the park," the founder of Park Slope parents group said at a meeting about the issue last week. "Why don’t we have a speed cyclist time?"
Prospect Park Barrels: Pedestrian Life Savers Or Child Death Traps?
Hit By A Cyclist, Prospect Park Pedestrian Sues City For $3 Million
If a pedestrian is critically injured by a cyclist while walking in a park, who is at fault? The pedestrian? The cyclist? Or, perhaps, the city? That's the question raised in a new $3 million dollar lawsuit the Post reports was just filed against the city. Actress Dana Jacks says her Prospect Park collision with cyclist David Sonenberg on June 11 left her "with brain trauma and face and skull fractures that kept her hospitalized for 25 days." She's already filed suit against the biker (and he against her) and now she's turned to the city, blaming her situation on its "negligent, careless and reckless" traffic enforcement in the park.
Map Of The Day: CrashStat Plots Cyclist And Pedestrian Crashes
As bicycles become more and more integrated into New York City (with more integration still to come!) one of the biggest issues facing both cyclists and pedestrians is safety. Enter CrashStat, the newest website from the folks at Transportation Alternatives. A simple enough idea, CrashStat overlays reported bicycle and pedestrian accidents from 1995-2009 onto a Google map which you can then explore in all the expected ways and then some.
Cyclist, Bar Owner Ray Deter Dies After Being Struck By Car
Ray Deter, owner of East Village bar D.B.A., died on Sunday night as a result of injuries sustained after being hit by a car at the intersection of Canal Street and West Broadway a week ago. According to the city medical examiner's office, Deter died of blunt impact head trauma, and his family noted on the bar's Facebook page that Deter would be taken off life support and wouldn't make it through the weekend. He was 53-years-old.
Marilyn Dershowitz Killed By 7-Ton Truck In Cycling Accident
Marilyn Dershowitz, sister-in-law to famed attorney Alan Dershowitz, was killed in a cycling accident yesterday afternoon as she rode through a dark stretch of road underneath a US Mail sorting plant. The 68-year-old was riding behind her husband Nathan Dershowitz, who told DNAinfo, "She waited for the light and I made the light and was riding slowly. When she didn't come, I saw her down and people around her." She was hit by a 7-ton truck, and though she was wearing a helmet, died shortly after being transported to Bellevue Hospital. The driver of the truck, a postal employee for 24 years, was unaware that he hit anyone until authorities tracked him down.
Cyclist Hit by Truck in Bushwick Slowly Recovering
On the morning of October 9th, a 21-year-old Cooper Union student was nearly killed on her bicycle when she was hit by a tractor trailer truck making a turn onto Varick Avenue in Bushwick. The cyclist, Emilie Louise Gossiau, suffered a broken femur, pelvic fractures, facial fractures, and stroke, according to one person familiar with the accident. Our source, who asked to remain anonymous, also told us "There was a direct impact on her abdomen and the intestines were pushed into her lungs, so in order to relieve the pressure and her ability to breathe, an incision was made." Today we received an update on her condition.
UPDATE: Cyclist "Impales" Jogger on Hudson River Bike Path
[UPDATE BELOW] A report that just came in over the wires that sounds appalling: Two bike riders collided on the Hudson River Greenway down in Tribeca, and one of them got impaled. According to preliminary reports, a female cyclist "has her hands impaled in the bicycle." We're trying to figure out how this happened, but it's possible one of the cyclists had unwrapped handlebars? What's not surprising is that there was a collision on the bike path—though deceptively safe, that bike path is often packed with cyclists who ride even more recklessly because they're not pedaling through traffic. Take it easy, people!
Fatal Bike Accident Victim "Rode Her Bike Everywhere"
Police have identified the victim of Saturday's fatal bike accident on Atlantic Avenue as Jasmine Herron, a young barista at Think Coffee on Mercer Street. Co-workers say she was an avid cyclist, and always wore a helmet. Her neighbor said, "She was a nice girl. It's a tragedy."
City's Cycling Growing Pains Dividing Walkers, Drivers, Bikers
Anyone who's followed along with the city's various cycling issues won't find much new in the Daily News's "Special Investigation" today, about how "pedestrians and cars clash over biking boom." There's the requisite quote from a biker-phobic pedestrian, 62-year-old Marjorie Levine: "When I, as a retired woman, walk these streets, I have fear of my safety that I will be hit by these riders and get knocked down." There's the requisite counterpoint from Transportation Alternatives spokesman Wiley Norvell: "We still have a really 'me first' culture on the street, whether you are a pedestrian, a driver or a big rig. The problem is that some of those 'me's' weigh tons and others weigh 110 pounds."
Delivery Bicyclist Fatally Mowed Down During Drug Bust Chase
In a sad twist of fate in Long Island City yesterday, a man who was on his way to make a food delivery to police officers was struck and killed by a man who had just made an illicit purchase from cops and was driving wildly while trying to avoid their chase. 27-year old Pablo Pasaras was riding his bike on 35th Avenue en route to deliver food from the restaurant Antojitos Cibaeno to nearby housing officers when he was plowed into by the black Range Rover driven by Martin Ocasio. The 33-year-old Ocasio had just bought drugs from undercover officers and was racing away from an unmarked squad car giving chase when he slammed into Pasaras and a nearby parked car around 6:30 p.m. Ocasio has been arrested nine times previously, including several for drug charges. Pasaras, a father of three, was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital. A family member called him "a very nice guy" and "a very good father."
