ART: "Drawing Art and Politics" seems like a fitting event to have on the calendar today. "Spend an evening with New York’s renowned graphic artists Jules Feiffer, David Levine, Stan Mack, and Edward Sorel, as they examine the ways in which complex social and political issues are depicted by artists in today’s media. Jules Feiffer will moderate a discussion that explores the roots of political art and social realism in the context of John Sloan’s early 20th-century illustrations of New Yorkers engaging in routine pastimes and pleasures. Happy Fat Tuesday! To help you celebrate it up here LIFEbeat Presents the Manhattan Mardi Gras. The proceeds will go to NO/AIDS Task Force. The New Orleans based AIDS service organization was virtually wiped out by hurricane Katrina. So even if we're in the Big Apple, we can help out the Big Easy.

There are some important shows this week. It's your last chance ever to see Q and not U (@ Knitting Factory). Brian Jonestown Massacre (whose gear was stolen the other day) are at the very small Pianos. Steve Winwood is at the very small Bowery Ballroom. Yesterday Bon Jovi rocked the very small Nokia Theater. These shows all matter, but they're not the focus of this week's post . Instead, let's concentrate this week on Hurricane Katrina survivor benefits.

World Leader Pretend

Gothamist simply adores New Orleans, but as tried and true New Yorkers, we know we could never live there full time. Sure, we're huge fans of overindulgence in every sense of the word, but after a week at Jazz Fest, gorging on beignets, fried oyster po boys, crawfish bread, and beer, we're ready for a detox week at the spa. So how can New Yorkers get a taste of the Big Easy without hopping on a plane? Enter Crawfish NY, brainchild of husband and wife team Chris and Lizzie Bicknell. Crawfish NY, which has catered many private parties in the past, recently opened themselves up to the public, throwing the first of what they hope to be an annual crawfish boil this past weekend at Harper Mansion in Gramercy.

We were strolling through a relatively predictable street fair on Columbus Avenue yesterday when we came across this sign:

Belatedly, Gothamist went to check out the new New York outpost of New Orleans's famous restaurant, Jacques-Imo's Cafe. The Columbus Avenue incarnation is dubbed simply Jacques-Imo's, but they say the fried chicken plate is the same, so we went to check it out. N'awlins chef Jacques Leonardi is world-famous for this signature dish -- even Amanda Hesser acknowledged it. Gothamist will eat just about anything that's been breaded and deep-fried, so we had to see what all the fuss was about.

Last week former Nets coach Byron Scott landed on his feet as the new head coach of the New Orleans Hornets. While doing some research on an upcoming story, Gothamist ran across this cloumn from the always knowledgeable John Hollinger on why Scott shouldn't expect his stay in the Big Easy to be very long.
